Hi all,

Sorry to ask.. dont know a whole lot about this stuff yet but I am really trying to educate myself.......Are these two breeds the same? I have been told they are but......? I ask because I just obtained an American Fox hound she is real young (2 months) but she seems to be very intelligent...

no they are not the same but walkers originated a long time ago from the foxhound aka trigg. The trigg is more of a running dog and the walker is a tree dog, but there is a running walker. They are close but not the same. Triggs tend to be smart and they got the speed to put pressure on game. They work real well as 1/4 trigg aka foxhound and 3/4 treeing walker. That way they got the speed of a foxhound and brains and then they get the treeing and tracking of the treeing walker. that cross seems to produce fast track dogs that can put hard pressure on the hard to catch game.I actually got a pup listed same breeding as described in this section under new addition. JMO

I have running walker in my dogs.
As long as you breed two good dogs togather you might have a 50 to 50% chance to get a good one. No differnt then any other breeding. In my book.

I have had some success in crossing Reg.UKC Walker and Chase/Hunters Horn Reg. Trigg Foxhound.I have tried to pick not so much individuals but a family or line of dogs.I looked at the winners and producers of winners in the walker coondog world and used a male to cross on a family of field winners in the Trigg running dog world.Iam a hunter first and breeder 2nd so I try to pick dogs that fit my requirements in my cat and fox hunting sport.I think I could apply the same procedure to the Running Walker for both these lines originaly came from the same root just branched out in a different line.Anyway thats how I see it...cooter

ive seen some that were 1/2 1/4 1/8 and even 1/16th "foxhound"

seemed to have exceptional speed and endurance-

have seen some i really liked -

the fastest treehounds ive seen will run with the average foxhounds ive seen--

seen a few foxhounds that were great cold trailers-

the average foxhound ive seen has NO cold trail in them

--if you need more speed and dont care about keeping registered dogs i think its a great shortcut to get it- ive used some - liked them alot --

dont have any now--


you have to be ready to give up a little on tree power- maybe cold trailing too
have to be selective to get any cold trailing out of either breed

lot of pure foxhounds arent gritty --ive seen pictures of over a dozen baying a small bobcat--ive seen some scared to death of a coyote




i had one that would cold trail .run and bay or kill a big coyote--alone

he was areal good part time , bear dog-seen him tree bear , coon , fisher , bobcat --

i know he was at least 1/2 registered foxhound -im not so sure he wasnt a crossbreed --if i had known that he was going to be a tree dog id never had run him on coyote --
all the cross breeds ive had--i didnt know anything about the foxhound side of them-- some were triggs julys running walkers- my buddy had a great english foxhound that looked and treed like a treeing walker--was a super cold trailer - gritty- -bug eyed bay dog --

he has several and thats only one ive seen --

anyways what im trying to say is-----choose both sides you breed very carefully--wont be great just because they are crossbred-but ill bet they will be faster track dogs than the tree hounds you cross with -

need to find some grit ,cold trail , some treeing or at least hard baydogs, from the foxhound side- all foxhounds dont have it-- a fox weighs 10 lbs - and is no fighter --
i went thru quite a few foxhounds before i found any with enuff grit for bear or even coyote -

i dont even like to say foxhounds--i lump them all together "coyote dogs " -- lol


the speed and endurance is almost automatically going to be good
