She was one of my foundation line of Big Horn Posse Big Game Hounds and the last breeding line bred Piute Mtn Redbone hounds. She was 9 years old this year and was very special to me in many ways. A couple months back she went to an awesome young hunter who really appreciated her and got her out on a fair amount of game in the short time he had her. He not only lost her, but his whole pack to a bear. I really hope he can get another pack together that will be equal to the caliber he had. I wish I had another hound to give him. I will miss Scarlett tremendously, but knowing she spent her life and even in death hunting as she was bred to do. I know God has a special place in Heaven for hounds like her. I hope so.
R I P Scarlett I will always love you

That is sad news indeed.. She was a beautiful hound,Had a perfect build. And i think she had the best nose of all of your posse. Good dogs are only with us a short time, At least her time was good. Scarlett gotta hunt alot of those wyoming mountains, what she was bred and born to do....... Fightin bear is much better then sittin home on a chain wishin you were out fightin bear...heres to Scarlett....i hope she got a mouthful of bearhair

Tessa, real sorry to hear that. Bummer Deal.
I'll have to say that something sounds fishy though. We've lost A dog here or there to a bear, but never an entire pack in one crack. I don't know of anyone from here who has either. The only exception is a buddy who had his dogs cross the road and a truck took out 3 of the four. Losing a whole pack sounds a lot more like wolves than a bear. JMO.

Nolte,
I don't know the specifics but I can tell you they were in grizz country and 4 dogs to 1 grizz is not good odds.

Yeah sounded fishy to me when I first read it, 4 dogs all getting killed, even if he was in grizz country, maybe a dog but not an entire pack, sounds more like a pack of wolves moved in on them also. When the chitt hits the fan on a rough bear, theres always going to be dogs that get whipped back and won't have a part in the fight.

sorry to hear of the loss also. i would be interested in the details also. was it a long ordeal with a trail of dogs or a bayup with a pile of casualities, i really don't want to seem insensitive but it does beg for explanations. i must admit protected species or not i hold a grudge. i do hope you and your friend the best. i always enjoyed you hunt stories as they were more about the experience then us guys seem to be able to share or rember not sure which.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. Like I said I don't know the specifics other than he had the dogs with him in an area where there are both grizz and wolves. All I know is what he told me.
"i lost all my dogs to a bear sunday evening. I was up at green river lakes letting them run and play around and they jumped a bear out of the willows. we took off after them but by the time we got there it was too late, scarlett Abby and Beau were all passed by the time i got there and i had to put my other Blue tick pepper down because of her condition."
I feel terrible for this lad and no matter what happened whether it be a bear or wolves doesn't change the fact that he lost his dogs and that breaks my heart. No one should ever have to deal with that. Scarlett's sire Charlie was killed by wolves a few years back outside Cody. I saw the photos of that and no person should ever have to experience that.
Again thanks for the kind words and support. Scarlett was the last line bred hound of a really great line. There are a few crosses I made out there with the blood, but no more line bred ones. Maybe Onza will breed Ozzy down the road, he was a half brother to Scarlett or TUCO will breed his female who is a daughter of Ozzy and Lola. Would be nice to know there will be some Piute Mtn blood still pumping through some big game hounds blood in the future.
