Folks, I just got three DVD's from BOW on this site who has put together some of the old movies of legendary Bill Green and his Green Mountain hounds hunting mountain lion out west and bear back in his home state.

These are really great to see like a vision into a time we will never expereince again. To see Bill swing into the sanddle and call up those old long earned hounds and set out on the track of a lion. It shows a period where he was tremendously successful at catching the long tails. Also his old hunting rigs and some wild chases for bear with cave fights and battles in the creeks. Some other interesting stuff Bill put together like slipping a dumbie on a rope in the fashion of a hunter with a rifle in on a big rutting buck mule deer. The deer attacks the dumbie and will not quit.

Also the current Green family has some really quality video of family bear hunts proving the tradition of big game hunting lives on for the this family.

I really recommend those of you who like the historical side of hound hunting like I do to get ahold of BOW and order a set for your enjoyment.

Remember Bill Green cut his teeth on wester big game hunting with the famous Lee Brothers of Arizona and went on to be one of the most successful hunters and dog breeders of his time.

They would be Great !! Just Remember Bill came Home with the Same Hounds he took Did'nt lose any .. The Lees lost nearly all of 20 hounds they Took .. I think they only came home with 2 or 3..

The Only thing I can think of about this is that the Lee's Hounds were used to Jumping on the Lion and not get hurt to badly.. And Bills Hounds after dealing with More Bear had alittle more Respect for the Critters .. But then I remember seeing Bills hounds going over a cliff and rolling that lion at the bottom.. Thats the Stuff that will get you KILLED by a Jag....

I don't think it had anything to do with the Lees dogs not being use to fighting bear because as Dale said they best bear dogs were most often the best Tigre dogs they had to have the nerve to put the pressure on. One of the reason the Lees did not run their 2-3 years old if possible on bear was yes they wanted them to learn to cold trail first but also they didn't want to take the chance of getting them whipped out before they were fully mature.

Watch Bill's dog fight that bear in the creek, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell which was the main bear dog in that deal. It was a UKC Wagner looking black and tan. This dog went to the head , and he was up close charging that bear and everytime he turned he got him some bear butt. Not saying the other dogs were not working but this black dog was always putting on the pressure he was hurting that bear. Yes a jaguar might have killed him. but surely on the ground a jaguar would have marked a lot of them dogs up. In the jungle before penicillion or combiotic were available only sulfa powder was used to try to arrest infection.

A lot of the Lee dogs were killed by infection, and drowning, snake bite and other maladies but the Lees had a lot of dog to fall back on. Back them the Lees generally kept over 100 hounds at a time. Now then Bill Green was not just a good hunter he was a top animal (not just dog man). He took personal pride in each dog and he made it a point to really take care of each hound. If they got cut up you can bet Bill was very careful about treating rhem to the best of his ability. He also didn't keep and peddle hundreds of hound so his dogs knew him and his voice and he was as you can see in the movies a wirey athletic guy that stayed right in the fight with the dogs . I bet these factors had a lot more to do with Bill bringing his hounds back alive.

Heres a big Question I have .. Is Why does the UKC have such a Wishy Washy .. History of the Bluetick Hound ??
Their Kinda Right But you would think they would have a more Defind History ..

Copied from the UKC site..

"It is most likely that the Bluetick is principally descended from the quick foxhounds of England with some introduction of the blood of various French hounds which were used for hunting big game. The French dogs were known as being very cold nosed. George Washington received five such French hounds from General Lafayette."

Blueticks were originally registered with UKC as English. In 1946, at the request of the Bluetick fanciers, UKC began registering Blueticks as a separate breed."

Stright from these DVDs were Watching the Partial Foundation of the Breed .. Bluetick "Bill" knew what he was Looking For to Start his Line !!!

And then you have the English Fokes that Believe that all the Breeds except (B &Ts and Redbone) Came from their Genetics ... Little do they Know that the Lees and Green Hounds that thro some Redticks where Reg. as "English"

I called the leading dog DNA lab in the country. My question was, " can you dna a bluetick and see what breeds were used to originate it ?" The answer was " not at this time because we do not have enough genetic markers".
