what is the best bear scent to use on a drag to train new dogs.and what is the best to use to drag with.thanks for all your info.

Everyone says that Grawes is the best but ive used cronks before also... Grawes is chunky and kinda hard to dilute... Grawes seems to stick around alot longer, but i would rather the dogs have to work as hard as possible

I haven't used or put any dogs down a drag in years, and in fact the last three or four has never been down one. However, the last scent I used was from National Scent Company out of California, and it says trail dog scent since 1928 on the label.......

For me the best drag is a chunk of hide from the animal I am training on. That way a little natural scent gets mixed in with the training scent.

What about making your own from actual bears? Would I take the glands from the feet and armpit areas and use only it on a drag? I have saw bears piss and crap once treed so I guess you could pour some piss and dump some crap at the tree saved from a bear. I have thought about this long and hard but, can't figure out a way to preserve it so that it wouldn't spoil or smell unnatural. Plus legal crap. Who knows how many dozen laws one would be breaking when doing this.

Well if you were allowed to do it and keep the whole bear then you could easily do drags with the feet, and actually put them on a stick or something and act as if you were a bear walking, but you would have to train a lot pups right after you got the bear. Also you could keep it fresh in a ziplock bag in a seperate fridge from the one you keep your food in for at least awhile, should hold scent for a bit.

Keep a chunk of bear hide or other body part with fur, and apply gland scent to it. Grawe's gland scents work the best and he sells bear, lion, bobcat, coon or whatever you need. In the beginning, you could simply wet the hide and it will give off enough scent. If you keep the hide for a long time, the scent will eventually dissipate, but it is useful as a drag when applying scent to it.

Haven't tried many dinstinct brands--I stopped looking once I tried Grawes.

I have also tried that, the hounds seem to trail harder when I have done that compared to just a drag. What other differences it makes I just don't know.
