Blood Hounds + Hunting = ???

Anyone out there hunt with bloodhounds. I know that they would have one heck of a nose the last blood I had was smarter than any dog I have had since I just never hunted him. I have read stories about "dead cat dogs" in Africa will run a track so old the cats already dead. :) Cheeta will supposedly run for days and the best dog to track it is the blood. Sounds like a bobcat doesn't it ?

Either way a Bloodhound is about the freindliest dogs I have ever owned Might just have to get one to crap in my yard and leave logs all over the back yard. :)

you are mislead about the cheetah. it is a sprinter not an endurance runner. there are guys in africa catching them w/ sighthounds. when i say catching i mean catching & stretching them. a cheetah is a lot bigger than you think but two or three boergreys can take them, or so i've been told by a fella from South Africa.

= waste of time.

If you want a hunting dog then that is what you need to look for.

i use one a little, he has a lot of good qualitys about him however some down falls too. there is a thread in the bobcat section that may give you some more details. finding one to tree is going to be your hardest part in finding a good one. the next problem is one that does not pick a fight at the tree.

= smart but, slow with no grit.

I know a guy that has tried it and tried crossing them with plotts.

toad, i beg to differ i have tried out several before i found one worthy to be my stud dog, and believe me speed and grit are not there down fall. they just take more work to stay in running shape but a well conditioned blood hound can flat out hual ass. as for as grit well lets just say a thirty second coon fight on a single bloodhound means that coon was a hell of a fighter. i have seen several of them make quick work of them.

the right lines run, finding those lines is no sunday picnic. most are show bred pos's. however hunting lines do exist you just got to do your research. mine came out of misouri. he runs and rigs bear so long as you keep him in shape ( which requires lots more work than your smaller typical hound) however the down fall in every one i tried out is that if they do happen to have treeing instincts (which i have found to be one of the hardest traits to find in a good blood) they tend to want to kill every other dog that tries to take there tree from them. at least in males i have tried. i have no experiance with females. i really only plan to breed mine now he has proved him self worthy to hunt so i do not care about his agression, just hope it breeds out in his crosses to other hounds wich it seems to be doing...

I guess I never asked where he got his breeding stock. He is a bear hunter and with the bloodhounds he had they wouldn't stay in the woods with a mean bear and were always way behind, maybe others have had better. I haven't talked to him in a while, I'll have to see if he still has any of the crossbreeds.

i am expecting my first cross any day now. i finally bred my hutch bloodhound to an b&t out of bud hutchins breeding. cant wait to see how the cross lines up. if they get the bloods grit and drive and the bitches manners to hunt in a pack i might have something worth keeping....?

hey steve, i just picked up two pups out of one of your bitches crossed to a cameron/hurricane stud. seems the genetics have lined up great they are turning on better than any pup i have ever seen as far as nose to the dirt sniff a track drive. hopefully the grit picks up a little only time will tell..

I really think that will be a Very good Cross .. The Female is Carrying a Little too Much Bloodhound, But Her parrents Chopper and Penny are very Good Track and Tree Hounds .. Chopper is Semi Silent which carried over to this pup .. But his Cameron is Full of Mouth Should work Out for the Good... Start it early and Good Luck !!

bloodhounds are not good hunters. something similar is the black and tan. WHich is medium big and medium speed. Also unlike a blood hound will normally fight an animal if it comes up to it face to face.
