Caught this one a mile and half from our orchard. Just a little female and it was not much of a trail and chase but was still fun
First one of the season here. Buddy(mostly lab 6 years old) and Jake(Half walker and half lab 2.5 years old) treed her, don't take my older dogs much anymore.
I visited a spring about mid morning to cool the dogs off and they started trailing her from there. Trailed about 1/2 mile and we found a dead white tail fawn, just the head eaten. Dogs then trailed out and up a grassy ridge and lost the scent to the heat and dryness on the hill(my guys are not all that cold nosed). The kill looked to be about a day old, was bloated ect.
So I decided to go home and do my days work then go back in the eveing and see if it had returned. We got back to the kill sight about 6 hours later and it had been fed on and covered, was not covered when we first found it. I sent Buddy and Jake out and heard them running but not barking. They did a big circle and I heard what I thought was Jake's light foot steps in the leaves coming towards me but it turned out to be the lion. It ran past me about 30 feet away Buddy was close behind it and Jake had circled wider. They treed it about 200 yards from the kill... it likly ran at the most a 1/2 mile circle.
I didn't have my camera with me so had to leave Jake and Buddy at the tree and run home. One my way back I ran into Buddy
guess he got tired of waiting for me. But Jake was still barking good when I got back and the Cat looked like it was bored with the whole thing by then. Buffy(14 year old border collie mix who used to catch lions solo) came back with me, she is mostly deaf so I don't take her much anymore, but she seemed to enjoy seeing the lion in the tree.
Hope you all enjoy my little story and pictures. I know I don't have the best dogs but they work good for what I have time for and the area I hunt. I only hunt 1-2 hours every morning from my house, and once in a while I take a longer loop and spend all day following my dogs
