My name is Dillon I am from winnemucca nv. I am 22 years old and am picking up three walker and blue tick cross hounds on saturday. I have never hunted with hounds before.I am very excited to start this new type of hunting and am going to work hard at it. The dogs are ten months old two girls one male. The male has three months training on dry ground. the females no training. They originaly came out of utah. I am buying them from a guy in elko nevada. I have talked to a guy here in town that ran cats with hounds for a long time. He has great info thats helping me. But im getting a lot of talk of having to go through lots of hounds to get a good cat hound. Or is it the amount of training you put into it. Or can a bad dog never be a good dog. I guess what im asking is am i gambling buying these dogs or should i buy the purest of hounds from somewhere else? I really appreciate any info. This is a great site.

Dillion, you first have to ask yourself if your in this to catch game or make a hound. They go hand in hand, but there is a HUGE difference.
The first, if you just wanna catch a lion or bobcat, easy fix, just go buy a good dog from someone who you can trust or a guy that will show you how the dog hunts in the woods. Cost $2,500.00 to $5000.00 and up.
The second, This requires you to be a total idiot, (i'm on this plan) It will cost you every spare dime you have "and then some". That $5000.00 dollar dog will be cheap by the time you are done tryin to make a pup into a lion, bobcat catchin hound.
Not tryin to disappoint you. I did the same thing. Took me 3 years to find the type of idiot proof dogs that i could hunt and not mess them up. I can guarantee you one thing if you are in this for the long haul, you will not find a "greater satisfaction" then raising and producing a nice hound. (I'm still tryin to get one)
Try and earn your keep and go with a knowledgeable houndsmen. He or she will teach you more then you stumbling around the hills chasin dogs that are chasin who knows what. I was fortunate enough to tag along with some great guys. I'm just a slow learner.

dillion, I am realitively new at the hound game and im about 1 1/2 yrs in it and the struggle that im going through right now is i have a dog that might turn out or might not. its kinda up in the air right now and my advise to you is to get some dogs that are out of proven blood lines and dont waist your time with the dogs that sit on the chain all the time and happen to slip it when a female comes into heat and then get some of those pups because thats what i did, although i didnt know that at the time but thats neither here nor there. and i have watched all my friends with dogs that come out of proven hunting bloodlines and they are flying circles around me and here shortly i believe i will be going back to square one and starting all over and this time with the right blood, and man like they say hindsight is 20/20 and it would suck for me to sit here and let someone else make the same mistake i did. so I say do some research of some dogs before you get any and make your descision based on that and dont get to anxious to get goin and make the mistake i did to where you just get what is available. Anyways i hope this helps you and good luck. by the way what is the guys name in elko that you might get those dogs from? just curious

Mr. Dillon, I agree with Poser and SD. It's obvious that you have been doing your homework by the way your post is written. I think that if you've read post from this site, you would know that it is not a good idea to start three pups at the same time. I was advised when i started, to run no more than two (1 preferred) young dogs and get an old pup trainer to help keep those young dogs straight. You will find that Poser hit it right on the mark, you will waste valuable time and plenty of money trying to run three young dogs without a trainer. There are lots of really good guys on this site that are willing to help new guys out and I am sure you can find an old pup trainer nowdays for really cheap. I hunt not to far from you if you would like to come out sometime let me know. Good luck with this new sickness....

Dillon, take posers first reply to your post and think on it real hard,It is a very accurate description of what most of us less expereinced nut cases have gone through when first infected with this madness,,Im in yr4 and still trying to find my way,Dont get discouraged though,It can and has been done, just take your time and dont get into a big hurry, I used to be of a mind that blood wasnt all that important, dogs are dogs kinda thinking, but I quickly learned the difference.not to say that there arent plenty of great grade dogs around,But the odds go up of getting a good one going if the blood is there in the first place,,JMO ..Good luck to you on your new adventure its a heck of a ride!!

Do yourself a big favor and just take one of those young dog its hard enough starting young dogs if you know what you are doing. you are just asking for a big wreck. later, Andy
