Caught a nice bear today.
Set the alarm for 5am, alarm went off and I thought to myself, hunting or nice warm naked girlfriend. Being the hard core hunter that i am i snuggled up to the girlfriend and went back to sleep. Woke up at 6:30am and figured i better get my lazy ass up. Fed mules, loaded dogs and mule and off i went. Climbed in the saddle at an early 8:30am. riding up the trail the elk were bugling the weather was perfect with a nice chill what a great day to hunt. Get to the top of the ridge and my cell phone rings. Its my girlfriend who cusses me out for taking her mule and to inform me the well went out. I said screw it im huntn and will worry bout it later.
Get to the top of the canyon and cross a nice grassy saddle. On one side is a nice oak brushy canyon with a spring(where i was heading) on the other side a hell hole!! Dogs start winding and head to the hell hole. I call them off once but they all want to go real bad so I figured I here to hunt so I let them go. The dogs dropped a few hundred yards into the head of the hell hole(which is straight down). First one dog opens then two, three then all in a blow and go bear chase. I sat in the saddle and listen to dogs echo thru out the canyon. The dogs cross the canyon and i could see glimpses of them thru the oak brush. I started watching the meadows in the direction the dogs were headed. After about a minute or two the old bruin came waddling his fat ass across the meadow with hounds about 30 seconds behind and of corse heading deeper into the hell hole. I figured he wouldnt run far being as fat as he was (unless he was a bad one) but he managed to make it all the way to the bottom of the hell hole which is only about a 1/2 mile but about a 1500ft drop in elevation. I lead my mule off to the bottom, had to jump out of his way as he slid by me a couple of times but after an hour or more made it to the tree. It was a nice redish/brown bear with a great coat. Would have been a great shooter but nobody with me so I left it in the tree.
Now the hard part dragging 6 hounds from the tree and getting back out of the hell hole. Gonna havta try Ikes method LOL. After a couple of hours of sweating and cussing all dogs, mule and I made it out. Ive been in it enough that I got a pretty good trail made to get out. Riding back to the truck the elk were still talking and I just had to stop thank god for a great day and getting to to do what I love. Loaded everything in the truck turned on the radio and Zack Brown band was singing life is good today!!
Vaya con Dios amimgo's!!
