Re: Patterdale for badger

No problem, will do dw. Tman I've heard there's some difference and a jagd will bay more where as the patts I own and ones I've hunted with make contact and once they have a good hold won't let go and then have to be dug to, but like I said I don't free cast. There took to a set likely holding game ...

Re: Kinda slow

As far as I know I'm the only person in my area that will run a red with a pack on purpose and the spots those races happen are on farms that I receive permission for on a predator control basis. When a man looks you in the eye and says I only ask you harvest anything you tree a feller has an obliga...

Re: Kinda slow

Thanks. I break mine off deer in an area where there thick as cattle, the county is bow only, and setting a pup up is fairly easy but I have had hounds that couldn't resist if nothing else was moving. Perks point is what I was getting at, the red dog is run to catch and jumps game other dogs are gru...

Re: Kinda slow

Thanks for the advice muleman that is something I've considered but have been weary of trying only because my pack is deer proof and most running dogs around me are deer dogs, as you know breaking off deer with our high population takes some work. Your also right about the speed, maybe I just assume...

Re: Kinda slow

Bear, coon, greys and the occasional red depending on where I'm running. I just don't have the speed to catch reds, if I could find non pen dogs like I have read you run I would add one to the pack there just rare as hens teeth around here.

Re: Patterdale for badger

I'll add, when I say expensive were talking about the price of a broke pack dog. There's several lines some larger some smaller. If your badger sets are fairly large a dog from a bigger line wouldn't be a problem, where I hunt the sets are smaller and require a smaller dog, for example a groundhog s...

Re: Patterdale for badger

The oldest is coming on two years and missed fox season last year and I picked up another pup that's coming on 6mo. The older is about 13 inches the pup seems as if he will be smaller but has a bit more drive as of now. They use them in Europe on badger and they will make contact on a coon so I woul...

Re: Patterdale for badger

No badger but groundhog, possum and barn rats on farms. This has been my first year working them and just helping out farmers with vermin control has has got me more places to hunt tree game. Had I known about these lil dogs I would have been working them years ago, probably the most biddable dogs I...

Re: Has it always been this hard?

I have a pup rigging and starting, he's around 18 months and it's his first full season just naturally rigs, does that mean he'll make it, absolutely not. Would I breed him just because he's a natural rig dog, absolutely not. Hunt first, I let the breeders do there job and I just hunt. No way a seve...

Re: Cur dogs near va?

Depends on your style of hunting. I would suggest a bear stock hound cur cross, the old timers just call em curs. To me they tend to strike a hotter track and have the bottom to put a runner up. A straight mnt. Cur will run a bear for sure but it seems most are squirrel bred, at least in my parts. M...

Re: Dog thieves

I had a English gyp get stolen on gov. land last year after quitting a bear race because she got into a yellow jacket nest. Looked for her for eight hours and finally spoke to gentleman setting up a horse camp who said he saw two guys just pick up off the road where I cut her at. she was one of thos...
