Re: tracks
I have had dogs that if they could start it and move it good there was more than a good chance they would tree it, I think if you know your dogs good enough you can tell if it's a fresh enough track, that's how I usually decide if I want to run it.

Re: puppy training tips
I think every new houndman should read John Wicks books, his books are mostly to do with coon hunting but you learn how to deal with hounds in general, no matter what you hunt you can learn how to raise and train hounds, he has spent as much time as anyone with hounds and knows the do's and dont's, ...

Re: REDICULOUS!!!!what's the excuse!!!!! For killing sows!!!
I live and hunt in Utah and have all my life and I think Bplott hit the nail on the head, when it comes to running game with hounds it's as hard as I have ever seen it to find something to run, I guess you could blame the fish & game for the way they manage, but as I have said many times we are ...

Re: Nance Stud (SLASH)
I have seen where tree size does matter in locating, most of the time when I have had dogs not locating the right tree is when it's a taller tree than usual for our area and there are a lot of trees around, they know it's there but some just don't know which one, the best locators usually know which...

Re: Nance Stud (SLASH)
I don't know how anyone can judge a strain or breed of any kind by hunting only two of them, I have seen dogs from all breeds that are not that good at locating and I also think locating is the toughest trait to find in a hound, the nance dogs I have hunted are the most well rounded dogs I have hunt...

Re: Nance Stud (SLASH)
I own a full brother to the Slash hound and have raised this line of hounds for years, I am 52 years old and have hunted with hounds since a young kid with my dad, I live in So. Utah and in my opinion have some of the toughest dry ground conditions, this strain has worked as well as any I have had f...

Re: UDWR LION STUDY 2013 YOUR OPINION???
I really don't have much faith in any government studies, they can make it look the way they want (just my opinion) but I think if we want to regulate lion numbers, it's up to us as hunters (the ones doing the harvesting) to closely keep track of the population (females and toms) as possible, we are...

Re: Something to think about!
That is a story for the grandkids for sure, I have for years hoped houndsmen would give more thought in taking females, mainly because the fish and game don't seem to know how or really care that much, I don't believe now days your going to see an over population of lions, these days big toms don't ...

Re: Hounds Locating Cats
I think cats are very tricky and challenging, I also believe that locating is the hardest trait to find in a hound, in our area cats will find holes or cracks in rocks and ledges to hide in, tall pines or trees make it harder to locate also, if you have cats to run keep on doing it you will make som...

Re: Idaho Fish and Game Lion Proposals
The Fish&Game can issue as many limits and tags as they want but they are not the ones filling the tags, maybe the blame is on us as houndsmen? for killing or helping someone kill that has a tag, if houndsmen want game to run maybe leave a few more in the tree, mainly females, I'm not here to ba...

Re: Lion hunting withs dogs prices on a hunt question...???
Check out Timber Mountain Outfitters in Utah, @ Timbermountainoutfitters. com. or call Jake, 435-559-1778, you can't go wrong, he is a serious lion hunter and gets it done, I think his price is $4500 now, and well worth it.

Re: layin up a young prospect?
I may be wrong but don't like to push a young dog one year or younger and sometimes even older, I think every dog is different, and that is one of the most important things I watch for when starting a young dog, my idea is that if you overdo it, some might get bored or sick and tired of doing it so ...

Re: Dogs that open on dogs
Have you run this dog by it's self on anything? could be it's a (me too) dog, just running with the others, I would try running it on it's own and see if it will trail and open on what you want it to, if it will then run it alone for a bit and then run it with the other dogs again and see if it help...
