Utah Panniers
I was thinking about getting some new panniers and I was wondering if the iron cloth panniers are the way to go. Thank you for your help.

I think these would be a great set. Most of mine are older than the hills and pretty beat up and I think this is the way I will go for some new ones. Some of the guys way up north in big bear country are going with the bear proof ones but they are a good deal higher priced.

Re: Utah Panniers
Get a hold of a set of T. Mike Murphy's game bags for elk quarters they are fantastic and will last for years. Just dump them in the washer and run them thru twice and they will look as good as new, keep your elk and you panniers clean.

These panniers are not near as fancy, but at $75 they are also not nearly as expensive. I use them to pack salt and mineral to cattle and to pack elk with. Mine are only 5 years old but I probably use them more than most and they have held up just fine. They will hold more weight than your horse can haul. I once put 200 lbs in these panniers on a horse that thought he wanted to buck, he couldn't tear them up(he tried), he couldn't buck very long either. If you need/want lids, they also have panniers with lids that are more expensive than 75 but are still a lot less then others you could buy.

thank you very much for the help
Re: Utah Panniers
There's a guy in Idaho named Jake Filmore who makes some great panniers. His are the heavy canvas type with leather ends ( similar to the Ray Holes type). However, he builds them a little bit different. Instead of having leather and canvas sewn together on the corner where they take a lot of wear hitting trees etc, his corners are leather on leather. The leather/ canvas transition is a few inches away from the corner.
He says they last longer, if you want his contact info, let me know

Re: Utah Panniers
I have the iron cloth panniers and like them. Good for packing out quarters or stuff and if they get bloody or dirty you just rinse them out and dry them. I like them better than canvas.
