Re: Define "Brains" in a Hound?
Tell me if this is "brains" or not, I don't know. I have been impressed many times by this little female and she is constantly teaching me something, if I take a moment to observe and trust her. Many times over her 9 year life span have I had to rethink what I thought I knew about training...

Re: personality
I have identified different personalities in all my dogs. I have a male that has had me thinking he's some sort of wizard at times, I've seen him do things I can't explain more than once. Other times, on easy races, he seems lazy and uninvolved. . . . Always, he will come off the tree on my approach...

Re: Pull the trigger? It's your choice
So, how do you sell this mindset to the "outfitter" (I mean houndsman :-)) that wants to make a quick buck. Or the "best houndsman in Colorado, actually the best houndsman in the western US" that ONLY shoots females when they're "problem cats"?? Here's a sad example: ht...

Re: A bobcat hunting book
Giftedness. . . . . David, your response has me thinking about those special gifts and the additional guards or supportive talents in dogs. . . as well as people. . . you get first tree on this cast for that bit of shared knowledge. Alas, what are the priorities for giftedness in a bobcat dog? Is pr...

Re: A bobcat hunting book
David, always a pleasure to read your posts! You've got a gift for putting thoughts into words and lyrics, and it's my hope that you continue regardless of the subject category! A request if you will - this may be covered in your book draft but it's interesting to me both in hunting and training sit...

Re: Bedding for newborns
Careful with shavings. . . . if you use them, make sure they are clean or "vacuumed" dust free shavings. Several years back, I had a bad experience with shavings in that the new born pups had their nostrils and mouths clogged with dust from shavings - won't ever use shavings again. Second ...

I don't have any experience dogging coyotes, but have always been interested.

Re: Wyoming Houndsmen
I think that what you're researching is a good idea and holds merit for sure. It's my opinion that some changes could be made here in Colorado as well, I'm sure a number hound folks in other western states feel the same way we do. You're going about it the right way. . . keep it up. Base your commen...

Re: HOW MANY CATS ARE IN YUR STATE?
In Colorado, the DOW claims that there are 3500-6000. I understand that they are hard to estimate as counting is difficult and studies are time consuming and expensive but this has always created more questions for me than answers. I often ponder how management plans are created when we either have ...

Buddy, What's your policy on this. . . .
There's a local guy from around here that is constantly stretching the law! Doing things time and time again that are in the gray area, only because he has his own interpretation of regulation and the DOW won't bust him as they are building a case. . . . wanting a conviction that will end his huntin...

Re: How Many Lions Die When a Female is Killed
Some good, sound, biological based, input here, based on experience. . . wish there were more guys in the woods who shared those sentiments! There is an outfitter operating in an area that I hunt that claims the following; "We need to kill females, for the strength of the population, otherwise ...

Re: Dry Ground Desert Bobcat Dogs
I've heard tell from more than one cat hunter about Bill Young and what he called his "chocolate dogs". Very reliable sources, and even a friend who hunted with and purchased a dog from Bill, if memory serves correct. He has been a cold trail in my cat hunting research, that I've yet to ge...

Re: Brady Davis' GGS's
Interesting reading. . . . Just an observation from the peanut gallery, in defense of vets across the country; "It is common knowledge that a dog cannot be certified possitive or negative until it is two years old. A Vet that is willing to go out on a limb like that, deserves to loose his/her l...

Passing on 31 lion tracks in 14 days. . . . . waiting for one of the two "La Plata County Goliaths". . . . . . . I guess I can't find any fault in that, rather just a difference of purpose. I'd rather have my dogs getting some exercise and experience (heaven knows they'll take all they can...

You might not beleive this. . . . .
A few other posts have me thinking about all the unbelievable things that happen in the woods with dogs. I want to hear the honest to God truth accounts of hunts where you've had "the unbelievable" happen. I'll even offer a pledge, and ask others to abide by it on this post; If you're will...
