Re: He do you go about picking a pup?
There are a lot of variables. I do not believe the lead dogs or fasted dog is the best he can be the worst. when I talk I am talking bobcat dogs they are the hardest to catch consistently in my opinion. scent conditions are a big factor different conditions will cause different reaction from the ...

Re: He do you go about picking a pup?
All dogs need to be hunted hard and handled right to turn out. Everybody has there own expectation as to what that is and that's OK that dog that they love is perfect for them. My expectation are pretty high I have had some great bobcat dogs which all dogs for me have a high yard stick to compare to ...

Re: Foxdogs
Perk I like what you say about people different expectation on what a dog is we all have different ideas and bred for different things. I Was born in Arkansas but raised in Oregon. My first hunting with hounds was with my uncles and cousins there fox, coon, squirrel and rabbits. I hunted a lot here ...

Re: He do you go about picking a pup?
If you have had the chance to read dave bobcat book i think he did a great job of describing different levels of hunters. Look at the professional basket ball players do you think he would get the job if he could not make a basket. we all walk to a different pace and that's ok. I have sent more time ...

Re: He do you go about picking a pup?
I breed and for bobcats i want a top cat dog. The only way to get it is by knowing the breeding. i have pups here 7 months that only have one out cross in six generations. You can not put something in a dog that is not born with it. training can make a big difference but will not make that top dog ...

Re: He do you go about picking a pup?

Re: He do you go about picking a pup?
The best way to pick a pup is to go hunt with the parents. take to the breeder to see why he bred these two and how many generations has he been breeding his dogs. them ask yourself that is this the type of dog you want for what you hunt, do you want a hard charging dog or more settled dog that ...

Re: Maybe a stupid question.
Some dogs are born afraid of bluff or ledges. There is not much you can do to get them over it. The ones that are real bold on cliffs will often times end up falling and die or get a injury that will end there hunting. Dewey

Re: Running dogs
I have not hunted or bred dogs for lion or bear for over 30 years. The dogs I breed do well on both lion and bear. Dogs trained on bear or lion are not bobcat dogs, most never make a top bobcat dog once started on big game. Bobcats are not hard to catch with dogs or with the right dogs with a hunter ...

Re: Running dogs
With bobcat hunting if you are not treeing bobcats speed has very little to do with it. What you need from running dogs is not the speed it is the way they run a track. They alway push ahead and not rehash a track like dogs can be that are bred for cold trailing. They do not open unless they are ...

Re: Turning a Track Around
In 55 years of running hounds I have owned 4 dogs that would almost always turn a track around be it coon, bobcat, bear or lion. Some dogs do it on a hot track some times, it seems that the colder the track the harder for them to turn around. Dogs will be better at getting the track out with only ...

Re: Nose
With dogs and scent I think we can never know what really happens at times. Most of my experience is on tree game bears lions bobcats and coons but I have been on a few hog hunts and fox hunting in Arkansas. With bobcat I have seen on several occasions when a bobcat is scared the track ends. I have ...
