Re: Maybe a stupid question.
Some dogs are born afraid of bluff or ledges. There is not much you can do to get them over it. The ones that are real bold on cliffs will often times end up falling and die or get a injury that will end there hunting. Dewey

Re: Running dogs
I have not hunted or bred dogs for lion or bear for over 30 years. The dogs I breed do well on both lion and bear. Dogs trained on bear or lion are not bobcat dogs, most never make a top bobcat dog once started on big game. Bobcats are not hard to catch with dogs or with the right dogs with a hunter ...

Re: Running dogs
With bobcat hunting if you are not treeing bobcats speed has very little to do with it. What you need from running dogs is not the speed it is the way they run a track. They alway push ahead and not rehash a track like dogs can be that are bred for cold trailing. They do not open unless they are lea...

Re: Turning a Track Around
In 55 years of running hounds I have owned 4 dogs that would almost always turn a track around be it coon, bobcat, bear or lion. Some dogs do it on a hot track some times, it seems that the colder the track the harder for them to turn around. Dogs will be better at getting the track out with only on...

Re: Nose
With dogs and scent I think we can never know what really happens at times. Most of my experience is on tree game bears lions bobcats and coons but I have been on a few hog hunts and fox hunting in Arkansas. With bobcat I have seen on several occasions when a bobcat is scared the track ends. I have ...

Re: Nose
There are so many factors to make a good dog that nose has very little to do with it. That said I feel I have and like dogs that take a really cold track and move it. As far as pounding out a track track to track In certain conditions and areas that is what is needed. I love a dog that works off the...

Re: Bobcat dog semen?
I will agree that there are more better bobcats dogs today them in the past 20 to 40 years. When there was a bear and cougar season most people ran everything. Now we have bobcat hunters that are mixing running dog with tree dogs to get bobcat dogs. There is a lot of good blood and bobcat hunters no...

That sure looks different from the Plott curs that were bred years ago. They did come in all colors black, brindle, saddle backs and even merles. Dewey

Re: Raising pups
I have tried testing heart rate that I read about 30 years ago [working with a vet that raised dog also], I have tried about every way that has ever been put into print or heard about to pick out the best pup. Nothing really works as far as I see. Three of the best dogs that I have ever raised with ...

Re: Trailing in the desert
The good ones are always in the right place at the right. I tone train my pups at 4months old. I have ruined some good young dogs trying to break them from trash also. The dogs I breed know will not handle much if any rough treatment. The way I start a young dog I very seldom have to break it from o...

Re: Trailing in the desert
Good topic. Bobcat hunting is the most challenging hunting with hounds there is in my opinion. Intelligence and desire are the most important things a dog can have. Out here we need real good locating tree dogs. A lot of people want cold trailers but do not realize what a cold trailer really is. It ...

Re: Bobcat bite infection
At most feed stores you can get first day mastitis medicine that is for cows udders it is a long point for ejecting into udders. It is a antibiotic which will flush the tooth bite and put antibiotics into the wound. Give 500 mg Cephalexin per 50 # of body weight. I do this as soon as I get back to t...

Re: Scared dog
Some dogs are shy. I see it in running dogs more than others. Sometimes it comes from rough handling. Most of the shy dogs I have worked with are very smart. One,made one of the best dogs that I owned but took some patient and time to get over it mostly with her it was getting to trust people. Diffe...
