Re: Drathaars

That Airedale was a nice dog, I put a lot into training her, but she didn't work out as good as I had hoped. Bert's dog is doing good in Millarville, the two are inseperable, but I think she has a barking issue. Also, his yard looks like it was cultivated, the Airedales like to dig!
Did you ever ...

Re: Close calls while baiting bear's??

Ontario guy. I had a look at your web-page. Good site, Some nice bears on there for sure. You guys get out and hustle on those baits, I commend you for getting so many done. And having them out a month before the hunters arrive is a whole lot of work.

Back to the question about being armed at a ...

Re: Close calls while baiting bear's??

You definitely have different bears than ours. Much different.
I baited an area that had oil and gas activity in the winter, but the country was pretty lonely for the most part in the months bears would be out. A lot of these bears had never dealt with people and maybe that was the problem, once ...

Re: Close calls while baiting bear's??

I've outfitted Bears for a good number of years in several camps, I have likely 800-1000 Bears on my tally sheet, 90 percent of which were on bait, mostly in NW Alberta. These Bears were taken in more remote locations and did not have a lot of experience with people.
I, at one time, did not carry a ...

Drathaars

I'm looking to see if anyone has any experience running Drathaars on Bears. I can't run Bears here to hunt them, it's illegal where I'm at. But I use dogs to haze bears out of Industrial Camps and worksites. I've been told a Drathaar will be gritty enough to stand up to a bear, especially if it ...

Re: Mtn. Cur Hog Dog into Bear Dog?

He's a nice dog to have around. I like him.
But,I went to my bear bait today, he ran along the quad great. To the trailhead. I walkd to the bait, he trailed along, about 20 yards back, nervous as hell. I just can't see him turning it around and being a go to bear dog.
And I can't see that he was a ...

Re: Trail Mix

Yup. Outstanding bait. I used lots of it, got it from Cory's Lucky 7 Bait out of Minnesota. The bears ate the hell out of it.

Re: Mtn. Cur Hog Dog into Bear Dog?

Thanks for that info, I appreciate that. Maybe it is just that he needs time to settle in. He sure didn't take long to start chasing deer and rabbits tho!

I wonder if the dog will ever come around, he wasn't cheap and I need a bear dog pronto. Maybe a guy will never find an experienced dog to fit ...

Mtn. Cur Hog Dog into Bear Dog?

Howdy Houndsmen,
Looking for opinions.
I picked up a Mtn. Cur from a fellow in Texas. He was used for hogs, gritty, gamey, no quit, etc. etc. etc.
I brought him up here about three weeks ago, he is skittish, scared of any loud noises. Hides when I fire off a .22.
I took him up to a bear bait, he had ...

truck kennels

Hello Folks,
Any thoughts of what brand of dog kennel is best. I am looking for a 3 or 4 dog model for the back of my truck. Need an insulated box for Cur size dogs, and am willing to spend for a quality unit.

Any input is appreciated.

Re: Bear Aversion Dogs

I sent a PM to Paco Jack, seems like a real nice guy, he advises he does not deal with problem bears in Camps or work sites. He hunts them.

I do have a Catahoula now, she is a good dog, but I have issues I'd like to correct with my next dogs. I have owned 4 Catahoulas, the first two wouldn't hunt ...

Re: Bear Aversion Dogs

Thanks for the reply on this guys, very interesting and good responses. The KBD's scare me a little, I am not a dog whisperer, I can get by, but they seem to take a lot of training. I think I am leaning towards the Mountain Cur, but am still undecided as of yet. Gotta decide soon, bears will out and ...
