Re: Treed lion
If it locks it gaze, and never takes it eyes of you and sinks down and they sort of glaze and the tip of the tail is twitching, you may want to be a little careful. I lion that is getting ready to jump usually looks around.

Re: Looking for answers
I doubt it was 44 getters but outlaw broadcast poison is a likely scenario. If the dogs were running on a bear they usually won't stop and pull a getter, but they sure can pick up a pellet or two.
With the old getters they usually don't make many tracks.
Are you in a wolf area?

Re: In the Footsteps of Harvey Caplin
Gary, I agree with you on the AR platform rifles for running shots they just make the ammo manufactures very happy. LOL! I love guns and have a ton of them but accurate nimble sporting arms are my passion whether they are rifles or shotguns. I spent a lot of time hunting jack rabbits as a kid with a...

Re: Looking for blueticks, COLD NOSE
There are guys on here more qualified than me to answer about Bluetick lines but I know there are still some out there. Somebody may ask why I say there are still some, I thought all blueticks were cold nosed. At the foundation of the breed when it was divided from the English Hounds a great emphasi...

Re: In the Footsteps of Harvey Caplin
Sounds like a great show Gary, thanks for the heads up. I always loved Harvey's photos and those old Stetson boxes. Saw many of them back in the day that were made into lamp shades. Have the photo of the guys holding the cattle on the tank on one side and the other of that hard and fast roper draggi...

Re: Lynx pelt
I don't have hardly any experience with Lynx, and the one I was on was by mistake. I had some really good lion dogs on it, and the snow was rather deep because it was high country. Maybe he was just smart or lucky but even though the track was fresh and they had it jumped he made us look stupid! Pro...

Re: Fast Off Dog Slow Hound
Sounds good, and I bet you have some fun doing it. I have some crossed British Labrador on Southern Arizona dry ground lion dog young dogs that quite amazing. Their mother the Lab is a very old style heavy type that has a nose like a bloodhound, and the father was is out of some of the best dry grou...

Re: Fast Off Dog Slow Hound
Most likely in training you are running on fairly fresh or warm scent. The GSP although a good tracking dog at times is bred to take a good deal of the trail out of the air, and thus is not as ground rooted as the hound. This means on hot scent he will be faster winding the scent high and driving th...

Re: Bob Marshall
It's been years since I have been in the Bob, but if you have horses or mules use them. Getting into likely spots can be a killer, and once you get there that's when the hunting begins. I had some of my first encounters with grizzly's in there and it is doubtful if your dogs are not hard-core bear d...

Re: Ted Nugent on California Game Management
Ha! Ha! Mark, Ted said he was allergic to smoke and a couple of other things, but skinny girls wasn't one of them. LOL!
I also heard Ted say a couple of years ago that Sammy Hagar got him to sipping a little of his Cabo Wabo tequila now and then, but that never came up.

Re: Ted Nugent on California Game Management
David, If you get a chance see if you can find a video of Fred's old Movie ( Badlands Bucks). Being in North Dakota you wouldn't have to go far to be right in the area where Fred was hunting along the Little Missouri between Medora and Marmarth. My first archery deer was just taken not far from wher...

Re: Ted Nugent on California Game Management
Ha! Ha! David I saw those pheasant shots too, and boy did it cost me. I decided I was going to duplicate that shot. Instead of pheasant I used sharptail grouse as my aerial targets. Holy smokes you talk about a bunch of lost arrows! I sailed them this way and that way, and due to the fact that sharp...

Re: Ted Nugent on California Game Management
CRA, You are so correct, Fred Bear was the icon that rocketed bow hunting to the huge place it is today. Many great archers out there, but Fred's talent, and vision to made it what it is today. In a modern world of high velocity rifles and sniper tested optics many young people are taking up the cha...
