Lion hounds for Patagonia

Postby Patagonia » Tue Apr 28, 2015 9:38 pm

Hello everybody,

I run a hunting lodge in Patagonia, Argentina (www.parquediana.com). We hunt Red Stag, European Mouflon and Alpine Ibex. We are currently loosing too many animals to cougars since people with good lion hounds are retiring and new generations are not taking their place (sad, I know).

I am looking to import an adult hunting dog and maybe a puppy for latter breeding. Being the international transport costly and time consuming we are looking for a very good dog as the cost of failure would be high.

Other than any goods dogs being available for purchase I would love to hear advice as to "how would you start a good pack in another country from scratch". Our weather and terrain are very similar to Colorado in the US.

THANKS A LOT!

Joaquin.

If you look in the selling section hound classifieds there is a guy who is twist on site. Andy Jensen is his name has good walkers for sale right now I just bought young dog off him. You will need at least 4 hounds to be set to run lions. Andys number is 4062813783. Walkers are fast hounds. Another guy who has good hounds is Bret westapal. His number is 4062538554 he has really good line of bluetick. You have got to watch some guys selling dogs on here some shady guys . Hope this helps u happy hunting dave

not knowing your conditions, I would try to buy hounds from an area similar to where your at. if you aren't running Lion in snow you probably do not want a snow dog. it may save you some money in the long run to come and try the dog here in the US before spending the money to import it. JMO

You guys have some of the best bred dogo Argentinos down around you.
Why not use them?
Several breeders use them for cats.
Will save you a TON of money.
Just a thought.

Hydro 1 you are right you can always find a good dog where you live go hunt with it see what it is then if your happy with it buy it.There are so many people who will sell you a dog on trial when it don't work out they are no ware to be found I always buy a dog under the tree.

Thanks gain. Down here Dogo Argentinos are not used for Cougar hunting. They are used a lot for wild boar hunting, purebreds and many times crossed with greyhound. They are known for ability to catch and fight prey more than for their nose. People who hunt wild boar with them will reach a boar that is being held down by 3-4 dogs and finish him with a knife. I am thinking that in the US you might have some people who bred some of these dogs with cougar hunting in mind, maybe taking away a little of the aggressiveness and focusing on the chase and nose. Arround here dogs that are too "aggressive" end up killed by the cougar or boar, so people want a bold dog, but one that will not get too close to the prey.

Most of the cougar dogs " or the ones left anyway, look like crosses of the fox-hound, griffon, etc.

Cheers,

J,

I have personally hunted puma in Argentina (Cordoba) with the Dogo Argentino, There are many breeders and hunters still actively hunting cougars with Dogos, as you said there are more hunters hunting pigs with them than there are hunters hunting cougars. But there are still hunters doing so successfully. If you would like, send me a PM and I can put you in contact with some hunters, but I understand if you are looking for more of a bay dog than a Dogo, maybe I can still help you.

Cheers

Totally get where you’re coming from, Joaquin. Starting a quality pack from scratch in another country is no small task—especially with the kind of terrain and predator pressure you're facing. Getting the right genetics from the start is crucial, even if it means paying more upfront. On a related note, if you’re thinking long-term and want something with global reach like your hunting lodge, crypto’s worth a look. It breaks down all those geographic and currency barriers. Have a look at https://jpcrypto.io/ —might be up your alley for handling international reach more smoothly.
