I have wondered the very same thing.......just what kind of cardio-conditioned shape are *most* big game houndsmen in?
Around here, we have steep hills / ravines, with so much coastal undergrowth, I can walk [ bash ] my way 20 ft through some it and my feet NEVER touch the ground, as I'm walking through the trees on branches and such. That's tough slugging, for me anyway, and I ain't moving through crap like that very quickly.
I road my dogs individually on my mountain bike, and have to ride in the large chainring just to try keep up to them. I also don the 28lb pack, hiking boots and hike / jog the local 7.5 km single track mtn. bike trails for exercising the "hiking muscle groups" and core strengthening. Sometimes I do this twice in a day, one trip with each dog as well as the 15 km biking with them.
It does help, but I still worry about being fit enough to keep up to the mutts when they get into some roadless, fuggly terrain, of which there is alot of......

I walk into a cage. The entire hour before that I sweat burn calories from worry and confusion of how I got myself into this kind of mess again. They lock the door. I spend the next fifteen minutes trying to figure out how to get back out with my hands in the air!
The next day as i walk throught the mountains and relive in my mind the narly squeeze I put on that sucker I often wonder if a rear naked choke would work on a cougar??? After all, the brazialian word (mayto lione) (sp) for the same choke translates as lion killer I believe.......

That's a hell of a way to get into shape Vise. And a rear naked choke hold will work on a lion if you learn the sidestep, or figure out a way to distract that lion. We had an old cowboy working a range in the Book Cliffs some years back that was riding along on his trusty steed. He happened to have two of his loyal cow dogs with him when a mountain lion leap from a ledge onto the horse he was riding. The horse bucked him off and left him there with the lion and those two cow dogs.
Well the old cow dog took to the lion and the lion grabbed it and choked it down with it's own rear naked choke hold, and held on like they do until the life is gone from their victim. That cowboy got to his feet and saw that old dog was taking the hit for him and wondered what now? Although he'd been scratched some from the attack he was healthy but not armed, so he ran over and picked up a nice sized rock. After returning to the scene where that lion lay choking down his dog, he bludgeon that lion in the head repeatedly until the life left it...........
So my answer is yes, a lion can be choked down or bludgeon to death if a guy has a distraction or can learn the sidestep..........

It's been done, just throw a good sized limb in and let them grab ahold and go to work. I didn't witness this, just heard about it. Same guy rode a half dead bull elk to the road once. I'm not sure if he's crazy, or he just doesn't know it can't be done.

I dont think I want my crotch near his choppers though so never mind that thought....
Back on track though.... I think the best conditioning you could do to get yourself ready for the mountains is to do some kind of stadium work out. The best thing really would be to just be in the mountains alot but I think a good stadium work out would simulate the real thing pretty good. I wouldnt go at a very grueling pace. Just give myself a steady burn. Hard to say how many to do cuz each stadium varies in size so maybe a going by time is best. Probably begin my workouts with 15 min of climbing if I havent been doing anything at all as far as fitness. I would do it 3 times a week. Then the next week bump it up 5 mins. Keep going up 5 every week. I get too bored going past 30 myself but if you could climb up and down a stadium at a slow jog for 40 mins you would never slow down in the high country!
