I've had real good luck with meat scraps of all kinds, too. Down here, a lot of people will feed nutria to their dogs, which is good, but I mostly stick to what I can get out of the freezer that's freezer burnt or from the slaughter house. One thing that works really good here in the cooler months is to boil up the meat in a big gumbo pot and then add in a couple health scoops of coars ground corn meal that I pick up from the feed store for almost nothing. I boil the meal with the meat and it makes a kind of gruel that will put weight on a hound and give it the protein it needs to stay in running shape. In cooler weather, it will keep in the pot after it's been cooked for two or three days with no problem. In the hotter months that doesn't work because of flies. Old folks here used to have "dog bred" made up when they killed a hog off of the cracklins and corn meal.
