I'll have to do a little more testing to answer your question about thick cover. As you may well know, I live in the northeastern portion of Utah and we have alot of open sky country, PJ stuff and some deep canyons with fur trees. When I wanted to make suyre a message got out I carried it in my hand so it could see the sky rather than in my zipped pocket. I'll do more field testing tomorrow if I go hunting.
As for the unit as a tracker, my brother-in-law told me several years ago we could buy a GPS sending unit and reciever and make or market our own collars--then he wondered what the marketability would be. He wanted me to work up a product idea and I just didn't figure the market was there if the price was too high. He is an electronical engineer from California and figures out how to make things work, then how to make them smaller and work, so I'm sure it can be done.
