Re: government line hounds
Brandon Jones is who Benny is talking about.
There is also Wilson in northern New Mexico. Clayton Wilson's brother I believe his name is McCoy.

Re: government line hounds
You are exactly right, hunt 14. Thanks for the help. It kept me from making phone calls to find out Brandon's last name. As for the northern part of the state, I don't know anyone (it's toooo stinkin cold up there in the winter), so there might be others. New Mexico's Wildlife Services program, in my opinion, is one of the worst run programs in the west. I can't see anyone that's not already established with dogs, ever having the opportunity to hire on and bring dogs with them.
plottpappaw, if you need any other assistance, and I can help, let me know.

Re: government line hounds
The dog sound very similar to a well known strain of dogs that is being used by US Wildlife Service Hunters in California, the dogs go back to the hounds of Govt. hunter Boone Shockley, I know several of these little high tan dogs ended up in North East, New Mexico and they were bred up by a man in Califonia whose first name is Alan. I have seen a few of these dogs in action and they were really nice cat and bear dogs.

Re: government line hounds
Does your dog look like this one?

I know there are tons of "high tan" looking dogs out there... but this dog came from the strain that Mike L is talking about.

Re: government line hounds
Then you must be talking about my little terrorist pup, Clyde. (Bonnie did herself in while harrasing the barn cats a week ago.)
If your dog is related to these dogs that Mike, Tyler and I are talking about, you could sure enough have a keeper!

Re: government line hounds
he has only been shown a dead coon and he went absolutly bazerk on it. does anyone know what they might be as far as what is in them. just for my own curiosity. also calling one high tan comes from what? i'm not to familiar with western mixed dogs and some terms used. i'm a southern country boy lol.

Re: government line hounds
Those dogs are 1/2 Nance Walker, and 1/2 Black and Tan ... I'm not sure as to the B&T line. Festus should know.
As for being called high tan, that is a dog that is black with red or brown markings on the face, head, and legs. I have seen high tan dogs that were saddle backed in their markings, also.

Re: government line hounds
thanks benny g. i hate to sound stupid or continuously nag ya'll i just like to know what i have and what to know what to expect from them but i have never owned a dog from out west or a nance bred dog. what should i expect as far as nose grit speed drive, etc?

Re: government line hounds
Some of those dogs will be just a little on the timid side, although the B&T takes most, if not all of that out of them. As for everything else, they should fit the bill perfectly!!! The one place that they will all be individuals is the grit. I have not had enough experience with them yet to make that call, but mine don't have much back down in them at their young age! If these pups didn't have so much drive, my female would still be alive. She just refused to settle for "the cats are out of reach", and she ended up getting crushed getting to them.
As for the questions, I don't mind. It offsets the BS that runs rampant on this board from some of the guys that want to be famous.

Re: government line hounds
I would suggest that you start out light handed, and work up from there. Don't let him walk all over you, just be careful until you know his limits. Sometimes after you get their attention, you can get by with less physical, and more verbal, but once again, they are all individuals. Good luck, and keep us updated.
