I got one of those pump Rossi's and LOVE IT. It was a spontaneous purchase. When I saw and handled it I couldn't put it back on the shelf. It's stainless with "exotic" brazilian hardwood so it's beautiful too. No sling though.
I also have a cut down 10/22 (stock not barrel) that a friend used as a pack gun. It's a good youth gun and has a sling so I can throw it over my shoulder and have my hands free.
Something to consider might be one of those Cricket rifles. Single shot, small, and cheap. Fun to shoot also.

Re: 22 questions
I have a Rossi pump gun in a nickel finish that I used for many years. It pointed well and the sights showed up in the light beam. It could be fired as rapidly as a semi-auto but you didn't have to fumble around in the dark unloading the chamber afterwards. Later do to all the electronic crap I started loading myself down with, I started packing a H&R .22 revolver that I quite frankly never shot all that well. A lot of coonhunts ended with a little more drama than I prefer! A couple of years ago, my kids bought me a stainless Contender pistol in .17 HMR ( Awesome Christmas present!!!). I equipped it with a laser sight and a sling with an ammo pouch. It works real good for me!
