I'm not an expert but I have read in several places that the gray fox is actually misnamed and is not a canid, but is closer related to the cat family. I don't know that any of the sources were "official" but assumed they had got their information from official sources. Wish I still had the encyclopedia of north american animals I had when I was a kid, now

I think all game has a different smell & all dogs should know this
If dog is broke right he will only run what u want him to.
I know well broke bobcat hounds will not run a house cat but some will run a gray fox, but nothing else. Every dog knows the different scent, some dogs have a different bark on different game. You can almost till every time a dog gets on a deer as he has a little different mouth. I can till when my cat dogs get on a coon, their bark in a little different, because they are expecting a shock at any second if they bark at a coon.
It is not mentioned much, but some of coyote hunters in the north are running wolf now, a wolf puts out a lot of scent & runs straight, not like a coyote always trying to be trickey & double back, etc. Dogs on a wolf will make a lot of noise & never make a loose. They will run wide open just like they were looking at him. Catch a lone wolf track in the snow & who know it might be a big coyote. lol
