For years had a supply of white cedar shavings, not chips, they worked great. Think they somewhat deter fleas & had no skin issues, like can happen with wet straw. Al

Mark, a friend of mine has house's similar to those. Many of his dogs like to mark their territory on the house and they started to corrode away in matter of a couple yrs. I think he bought 8 or 9 and he was not a happy camper.
Biggest thing on a wood house is to overhang the top by 4 inches or so on all sides. Mine overhang 8 in. on the front to keep more rain out of the entrance. I've got one that is 16 yrs old and it looks not a day over 3 years old. Kind of like a cougar box...lol
Some dogs are harder on a house than others.

Mondo, good point.....i find that when you run into a house pisser or water bucket pisser just drive a wooden stake in the ground at the very far reach of the chain so they cant get wrapped up in it and squirt a little coyote piss on it. They will use that stake to piss on forever once they get started.
