Is that supposed to be Good news or bad news...
I don't think the problem is cougar numbers.. It's the Method in which they are correcting it.
It's just a Shame that Oregon can't manage cougars properly like most other Western States do (1994 ballot).. I don't think anyone is dis-agreeing that cougars population is high and damaging elk numbers.... The question I have is it right to Kill off one big game animal using agents to manage the numbers of another game animal? Is it that Elk #'s and Elk Hunting is some how more important than Cougars Hunting as a Game animal, Manage the cougars (absolutely!) but find a way to do it using Hunters.. Not Agents!.. Don't whine to me about how 1994 ties their hands, If it was a Mistake then it's time fight that mistake, making a bunch of Agents go out and Kill cougars is no more wrong than what the ANTI"s Did in 1994... They are just putthing the Nails in the coffin..
I personally think it's very dis-appointing that They have to pay agents to go in and fix the Problem... It's not a sound Management practice.. So does it help the Elk numbers.. Absolutely.. Is it a Success.. I guess that depends on what your idea of Successfuly Wildlife Managment.
Anyways it Sounds like Oregon has found the new and improved way of 21st Century WildeLife Management. Most importantly when the ANTI's take away our hunting rights.. Oregon is finding a way to do it without The hunters.. I guess we should be giving them a Metal or trophy or something for helping figure it out.??
Anyways.. This is great news for the Elk hunters, I'm happy for them.. They should be happy too, Anti's can be happy that "ONLY ODFW agents" can hunt. The governor can be happy that people won't be Enjoying themselves Hunting cougars with dogs and that it's considered a JOB or "PLAN" to kill them rather than allow people to enjoy the sport of it...
Just my two Cents.. But that's probably not what you wanted to hear..

My frien budwy is saying privitetize is wrong/ it is absolutel wrong if it intitlas but local few, how ever I think it should only intital Ore state hunters ONLY, and they shoud do the same in Ca. and in Wa. Limit only houndhunters from that state ONLY/ no dudes comeing-in from out of state with or with out their own hounds and yetunder a licensed guide! Why ???? because ya need a few yrs too recrunch the new datta too see howthe new system is working out befor ya just open up the flood gates to every one. However I`m against just a few chosen few detramation permitt hunters for the state doing it/ them boys ruient it for all hound hunters and it needs to stop by God !Ive hunted and known these boys and there fine loveable houndmen, but lets face it as a fact-not as anopenion=they are whats keeping hound hunters from sport species dispatchen lion !?Openions may change but facts remain !

I too am very disgusted in the way that oregon is handling the whole cougar deal. I agree with you buddy that oregon should allow hunters to control the cougar population but how and what can we as the hunters do to change that. I live in Oregon and constantly feel jealous of the other states being able to hunt lions with hounds. If posibily we could get something figure out like a serious game plan to correct this problem than maybe we the people can start to try to correct. so any ideas on how to do this. lets get the ball rolling!!!
