I have a 2001 Toyota Tacoma crew cab TRD with 160,000. I just had the transmission rebuilt because of a bad pump. I just made two trips to Idaho with the truck and averaged between 18-19 mpg. That was at speeds between 75-85, so I didn't think that was too shabby. Mine has the added leaf in the back for dog box, dogs, and gear.
Rico, tell me more about the modification with the TRDs.. On mine, the diff lock only works in 4 low. It would be worth the mod to have the diff lock work in 4 high.
Thanks

Joe, the Mods on the TRD package include;
progressive rate front and rear springs
Bilstein shocks
larger front sway bar
rear diff lock
And those fancy TRD stickers on the bed!

I have the TRD package on mine and have all the items you mentioned. By reading Rico's post it almost sounds like there may be an after market modification to allow the diff lock to be used in 4 HI. As it is right now, the diff lock only stays engaged when your in 4 Low.

Joe,
If you do this mod. that I was talking about you can lock the rear differintal together in 4-low, 4-hi and also 2-hi (for what ever good that does). Got to be a little carefull the truck will get a little squrley in the 4-hi mod.
If I remember right you just have to switch two wires under the dash. It really isn't that hard just make sure you read the directions carefully.
To find the mod. you need to go to a board called TTORA.com it's all about Toyota then do a search on (The Grey Wire Mod.). Or you might be able to just google, Grey Wire Mod. and something might come up.
Good luck.

I know a lot of people that have owned tacoma's. They seem like they hold up really well, sturdy little truck so it seems. Never owned one, but they seem to be a good little rig. Small, so they can squeeze through places that full size trucks can't. they have enough power to get them just about anywhere. I have an 01 F-150 that i'm runnin with a 6 inch lift and 35-12.50 tires. love it to death, but it cant seem to squeeze through little places a toyota can. I'd be willing to say, if i strayed away from fords i'd probably buy a toyota.
