You guys, someone mentioned a base of those Red 'n Whites going to Souther Utah at some point. Now I have had Kendall Prisbey and his nephews Chriss and Billy Rob hunting with my hounds and they say they've got a strain of Red 'n White they use in Southern Utah.Anyone know these guys and wondering if they have hounds related to the ones mentioned here.

The red dogs we have go back to the Shelley stock but the two strains from Holcomb and Shelley have been crossed right from the early years. I suppose thats why our litters throw the black and white as well as red 'n white.

My brother although not a houndman has an outfitting business and a venison de-boning plant and we get to cull large amounts of assorted game for the meat market. On occassion I get to help him shoot on the big culls and I collect the green tripe ( offal ) and use that in the feeding ration.I hire some casual workers who just clean out the stomachs and milk the intestines. When its cold enough we let these wind dry on racks and bag it.Others are frozen and stored that way.We dont clean out the offal to much as I believe the more natural the better to resemble a canines diet.

The hounds staple diet is a mixture of 3 parts maize meal to 1 part fish meal or carcass meal cooked into a poridge we add the offal as well. This is especially good for the hounds as they more often than not hunt 5 days a week.At the moment I'm getting lots of expired milk of the shelf - about 500 liters a week which gets fed with the poridge.

Now and again I get an old horse that needs to be put down and that gets cut up entirely even the hide and cooked for the hounds.

I'll be back later - Roy.

Roy,

Have you tried getting goats milk? The fat molecules in Goat milk is much smaller than cow milk. This contributes partially to the digestibility and enables the dog to digest without scours or bowel irritation.

I have been feeding goats milk to supplement pups and weanlings, I like it.

Rowdy thanks for that. I have often thought of aquiring a number of milk goats as I live in a small town and may be able to stable them in my yard as I have 3 plots and quite a bit of space.Alternatively I could do it on a buddies farm near town.

It is deffinately something I intend trying at some point soon.By the way I had a good hound called Rowdy - you two aren't related somehow ?

Take care and thanks for the tip.

I have never hunted around the Robbs but Hal Mecham did hunt with Val Robb and made a number of crosses between his dogs and the Robb dogs. Mecham claims that he and Bruce Nay hunted together and swapped or crossed dogs since they were kids; he also claims that he and John Kane hunted and traded dogs together a good bit. John Kane and Richard Holcome did the same, that is hunted and swapped dogs as well, then he threw out another dirt lion name from the south, a man called Hap Blackston. Hal says Hap and Richard did alot of hunting and swapping together as well. Bottom line, all those guys did alot of out crossing and sharing the best blood they had with each other and that blood continues on with alot of people today......

So if your dogs came from Holcome then they may well tie into Mecham, Robb, Blackston, and Kane as well.

Thanks Ike , I posted a question to your post on hounds from Southern Utah. You guys really got me going this end. Seems like the field is now narrowing in the right direction.

Yup you may have a point there. If it gets to much I guess I can trade em for some of Ike's old type hounds. You guys can go visit him then an have goat milk in your coffee. Please send pics of Ike milking them goats.

Ike,

Back to your posting April 7, 2010 with photos of your brown and white. I rescued one several years ago that came from eastern Utah. He looks very much like yours. Has the shape of a brown heart mid-back to rump. Same coloring. Not sure he might have been gun shy. I've had a lot of people tell me what a good-looking dog he is.

When I rescued him, they had him listed as a hound mix. All red tick, that's for sure. I'm curious to know if you might recognize him and who the parents / stock might be.

He has worked out to be a terrific companion. While I'm not a hunter, he has daily opportunity to keep his interests up at home, open fields, mountains and Bahamian beach time in the winter.

A couple of years ago, someone who was selling a fully trained dog suggested he might be one of Hal Meacham's.
