When I had just one mutt, I MADE the BARF foood for it. Now with 3 potlickers, it`s just too labourious. When I get a BF grinder.........
Dogs require raw bones for phosphorus and calcium, and I would have them ground to a pulp, meaning no risk of GI tract puncture.
Eukanuba with Orijen as staple. Both spendy at the till.....I hand over $80 per bag and get a little change back.
Lots of US brands listed here I`ve never even heard about.......
I do know that the pet food industry is not regulated, like human food industry is both in the US and Canada, so, manufacturers can and do pretty much put what ever they want into their mix. I saw a W5 type news show where euthanized cats and dogs were picked up from kill shelters and recycled into pet food.....medications, toxins, diseases and all.
Maybe your potlicker really was eating Ol`Roy!
IMO, you get what you pay for.

I use Enhance-Hunters Edge. Dogs look real good on it and seem to have no bottom. I'm feeding 2 cups with a handful of raw meat and a vitamin per day. In the winter I'll kick that up to 3-4 cups per day with the meat/vitamin and sometimes cook up a mess of elk and deer liver in a crock pot. They get a nice warm meal for a couple of days.

I believe all Dog and cat foods are USDA regulated meaning that they have standards that must be upheld. On the bag they are required by law to show all ingrediants and minerals added. They can thou use "fillers" that (I believe) are't as closely regulated. I will have to look at my Vet book but, I believe some fillers are actually deadly to dogs and cats if feed in a large dose but, CAN be used as fillers. That's nice to know.....
with that said.......
I feed Sport Mix 24x20. I like it and I can get it at Co-op when I get the rest of my barn yard stock their food. I like to get butcher shop meat when I can or old freezer burt meat.

Diamond High Energy Sporting Dog formula. Have fed it for years and it kept my red dogs in good form. Feeding it to my little blue here and she is the easiest keeper so 50 pound bag should last awhile.

I believe the old mountain people used to make a course corn bread type stuff to feed their dogs. I bet those turds were real burners coming out.

I'm feeding Diamond Naturals now for the hounds and terriers. It looks to be much better quality than the regular Diamond. My dad still feed Science Diet because he's been feeding it for over 20 years and is to stuborn to change. He will try something else and claims the dogs get sick on it and goes back to Science Diet.

Check out a website called dogfoodanalysis.com
They have every dog food I have ever heard of, and many I never knew existed listed on there. You can search the site and find certain foods.
They rank the dog foods from 1-6 STARS and break down the labels/ingredients telling you whats good and bad about them. Check it out and see where your dog food ranks. I found out I was feeding some food with questionable ingredients and switched.
I also found the foods in the 5 and 6 STAR level were way to spendy for my budget, feeding a pack of dogs. It would not be that bad if you were only feeding one dog.
I know there is more to nutrition than how many cups you feed/ what the turds look like/ and what kind of shape the mutts are in. Cancer has been linked to certain ingredients and poor quality food. I have lost 2 dogs to cancer over the years and I have had friends who have lost some dang good dogs to cancer. I don't know if it was dog food related. However, it is hard enough to find those really great dogs, only to loose them before thier time because the food you were feeding them.
