Re: whats to cold
Last year 3 of us were hunting together and we dropped the dogs at about 11 AM and it was right around 0 or so. They left on the track a little slowly but got it rolling within a mile or so. They ran for 5-7 miles before treeing. We cheated with the truck a little and only had to walk in about 3 miles. After patting the dogs and leaving the lion in the tree, we started walking out. My dogs and one other guy's were fine, but the other guy's would stop and try to build a bed under each tree they came by. By the time we got back to the truck we almost had to carry his dogs. They healed up fine with nothing permanent.
The difference in the dogs was the feed they were getting....Me and the other guy feed good feed, the guy that had the problems feeds the cheap shit. It made a believer out of me.
When we got back to the truck around dark it was -5 and a little breeze. It was COLD!!
Probably won't do that again.....till I see another track.

Re: whats to cold
I pretty much hunt evry day whatever the temp. I have froze the tits off females before but otherwise haven't had much problem although some dogs especially slick haired ones and for some reason walkers (must be a coonhound trait
) really don't like the cold and don't want to get out of the box.
Don't know that I've hunted much below -20 for the simple reason it don't get that cold where I hunt much. Have spent the night out though at about -10, be sure you are prepared and have firestarter in your pack. A couple years ago I rolled my snowmobile over the mountain and had to snowshoe out about 6-7 miles. (when hunting by myself I try to stay within 15 miles of the truck as I don't want to hike farther than that on snowshoes) I called a friend of mine to come up and help get the snowmobile comealonged back up the next day. I had been camped in my truck for 3 days hunting and the next morning it really felt warm, when my friend got there he had a thermometer in his truck and it read -7, don't know what it had been the couple days before that to make -7 seem warm, but it must have been cold. I had caught a bobcat each day and the dogs didn't have anyproblem trailing. On good soft snow the dogs can trail fine in cold weather, but when the snow is froze or on frozen dry ground they do a lot better when it warms up.

Re: whats to cold
My dogs will hunt in any weather I will. The hound that grew up with me is much better about cold weather than my southern boy from Kentucky--he sometimes has to be shoved out the door, and shivers easily when he isn't moving.
My hounds are house dogs, but they do ok below zero. I will go out on a a calm night when it is below zero, but there isn't usually much moving. But, if we have had a week of below zero weather and it warms up a few degrees, something will be moving, and both the hounds and I may be restless enough to chase it. (Needless to say, we don't have lions in NY but we do have bobcats and coons). The important thing is to dress properly for it and I let the hounds ride in the cab with the heater on when they get back.

Re: whats to cold
I'll hunt whatever my dogs will. I pack road flares in my pack. Those things will start a fire in any condition (heck they burn underwater) and there have been times where my hands were cold enough I was glad to have an easy firestarter!
