For the hunting you do, I dont think you could make a better choice.

Id work him on a chained or penned bear prior to hunting, so he doesnt get killed.
DD owners in Russia do this very thing, a Russian club has a bear and boar decoy test for baying

On coyotes, they wont run, and that may be an issue.
Other breeds make better coyote decoy dogs than DDs, as they want to close on fur, not bark at it or run away from it.

DDs are not a bulldog or pit, but they are hard on game.
Harder than most other breeds Ive seen.

Keep us updated and congrats on your choice.

I looked at breeding to this import stud, sadly he died of bloat last fall.
His Owner loved him, said he was a true all day dog in the field and sweet at home.
Great pace, and went about 85lbs solid.

Back in the 80s, I met the German fellow that brought the first PP into the US. It was in Palmdale, CA. But I can't remember his name. I was running bears back then but they were using them more on birds.

I have 8 pups here now that just turned 9 weeks old. They are half GWP and half hound. I will be raising them and training them here, they will be running fur and big game. Mother is a GWP that handles anything from birds to furbearer and the father is hound used for bear and hogs here in NC. This was just a breeding I always wanted to do for myself, and will keep all the pups here for my own use.

I have a drahthaar that learned to track on bears. Every morning, from 3 months to 7 months, I got him on a fresh bear track that had been laid that night. He sight chased his first bear at 3.5 months and treed his first bear at 4 months. The entire time, he's shown to be a patient low head tracker that pushes the pace when appropriate. I even got him on a few lions and converted one to chase.

When he was sent to a buddy to prep for his vjp (the spring natural ability test for puppies), he was run daily for months on jackrabbits and cottontails. When I got him back, I sort of laid off the bears but put him on a lion almost every week. It was evident pretty quick that the months of bunny work gave him an advanced education in tracking. While a bear leaves the scent trail of a trash truck, the bunnies don't and the can leave scent gaps and disappear easily. He was much more focused on the lion scent trail and did a fantastic job of piecing together the trail.

I found this site because I was interested in adding a couple of hounds and piecing together a dry ground lion pack.

This cross worked pretty good. If I was to do it again, I would look for a more versatile male to cross over to. As I get older, I enjoy running all tree game and this cross really loved bear and hogs. Got a cross in mind that includes my male treeing cur that I believe would produce the kind of dog I want. A close worker with brains until they hit a track.
