the tallest oak ya ever seen the highest mountains the meanest bear the youngest pups ya left a opening
bob in know a houndsmen who hunts a few diffents states the coast of northcarolina is pretty hard on the dogs and hunter because the lack of trees and the thick brush plus the guys drag the roads and only run the big guys that are to fat to tree so there is alot more ground fightin in spots like that
how would ya like to crawl in to get a shot at a bear then have him run ya over makes things interesting
he says them bears in maine are pretty tough to tree compared to other places the brush slows the dogs down more than the bear spots like newyork and virginia spots can be just timber and the dogs can make for a short race and run fast
them bear in maine can be pretty mean but i have not heard of dogs getting killed but have seen a bear run for a few years bang up dogs year after year till he was treed with 6 veteran dogs from 3 packs of hounds even that did not go well
seems like hogs and bears learn to run dogs down and get better with age if not stopped
i dont know if the bears are meaner or the dogs smarter in maine

I would have to agree with you to some extent .I always thought that the MEAN old BAYED bear was pretty smart at times . I have hunted North Carolina eastern coastal twice . It sure can get NASTY in spots . In our area of Maine we can come across some very DIVERSE geography all in the same day ,chasing the same bear . Hardwood ridges , Patches of Softwoods that we consider deer yards , ,Jackpines ,Cedar bogs and Swamps ..Clearcuts with blow downs and Slash up the Ying Yang . Over the years we have had bears both tree and Bay in these diverse type areas . While the bears and hounds can work there way through that stuff ,The older I get the more I HATE the blow down /Slashy Crap .

I would also have to say that in that blow down slashy stuff is where we have seen the most damage from the mean bears . It is almost like they know they have the upper hand and help for the hounds may take some time getting there .

Sure wish I knew what bears were thinking when they decide to fight the hounds

again i hunt in the mountain region NC mostly not the coast region. i do sometimes hunt the coast but i mostly hunt in the mountains where the ground is steep and is as thick or thicker in places as it is on the coast.My dad lost one of his best dogs the other day because he was washed over a set of waterfalls that were about 110 feet high. there are plenty of ivy and laurel thickets were you have to belly crawl in on a bayed bear and stick the gun to him and take care of business. Again mountains of NC not the coast it totally different terrain.
