Sounds like a good day behind a tough hound Mike. And you are correct in implying that the trophy size often times doesn't touch on the quality of the hound or hunt that made it all happen. I can remember lots of tough hunts like you described when I thought all was lost only to have one special hound finish the track or jump that lion--funny how it goes from nothing to something in a matter of seconds. And telling those stories are the only way those hounds aren't lost to time, even though some of us get our butts jumped every time we tell one..................
keep'em treed,

Well the only lion I've ever seen wieghed scored 14 7/16" I believe and it was brought out whole as it wasn't very far from the snowmobile, and the outfitter I was guiding for wanted to weigh it. It weighed 160 lbs. It was not a great cat, but a good lion none the less. I cannot remember how old the lion was or even if the hunter recieved the data back from the DWR. I have pictures of the cat, but don't have a scanner. Thats one thing good about digital cameras I guess if you pack them you can just download them on a computer.

Until I got a scanner, I just took a pic of a pic with my digital, it worked ok, if the light was right.

Flacko,
Arizona is areally up in arms with their desert bighorns in the Kofu area. This area was only a trancient area for lions in the past but now a few lions have moved in there and developed a taste for mountain mutton. Sounds like they are really going to hammer them but they said it in the usual diplomatic way. We are not trying to wipe out the lions becasue they are very important big game species for Arizona. Lions however are not at all endangered and they are the most broadly dispersed big game animal in North America.
Why do you reckon the lions decided to stay? Big sheep herd, sheep taste good, sheep pretty dumb and easy to kill for a cat.
Now as far as really big lions down in that desert country I wouldn't think so but in the great old 1950's biology based book. (Puma) photos are shown of a lion that weighed 276 killed not far from Nogales. So you never know.

The biggest I've killed was in feb of 2009. He was 8'9" long, weighed 212, and the skull was 15 9/16. Don't know if I will ever be able to beat this one.

Mr. Daves,
That is very close to the U.S. record for cougar and we look forward to seeing him listed in the Boone and Crockett Record book.

Cought this old bugger years ago several times, he had to be 3 ft from back to belly and was built like a tank in the front end and a foot like a pie plate. He was sure impressive to look at.
