You know I think you have hit the nail on the head with that one. I have been talking with him about a bear dog or supposed bear dog he has for sale. And even though he stated that he would show the dog in the woods he has only made excuses as to why he can not. And its very funny this man has such a hard time with Mike offering a great service and selling some wonderful dogs to many fine Houndsmen for $1500-$2000. Yet he has no shame in trying to pass his bear dog off for $2500
RandTMcKnight:
As for what Mike would think about all of this I bet he would laugh his ass off. To hear about all these men who are so insecure with their own breeding and training that they have to put his down. He has the successful business to stand behind his work and many many fine Houndsmen all over this country more then willing to offer references about his dogs and him.

Re: Dogs from Mike Kemp
From the dogs I've seen,I'm impressed with the dogs and Kemp himself. It's evident that Mike's a hunter and a dogman. He's got a good thing going, and after this many years and dogs spread all over he'got a good reputation.I kick myself all the time for putting out the money last year on something other than his stock. Some of the top cathunters in the Northwest are using these dogs with alot of sucess[these guys are hard to please individuals-I know I hunt with them]dogs like Mike Kemps are hard to find,he knows it.After looking himself,I don't blame him for capitalizing on it.

Re: Dogs from Mike Kemp
Mike has nice dogs for big game no dout about it and they seem to hunt anywhere anytime. I think his price's and his training/culling process are also really fair and good on his line with keeping it real and to the point. GOOD HUNTING DOGS. But the main thing you all seem to miss is Mike is as honest as the day is long. If you f**k with him you'll get the same treatment back. If your fair with him he's the same back. If you don't like your dog he'll work with ya. And believe me if a litter turns out bad or a poor cross is made he's the first to say it and he's the first to get the gun. You can't go wrong with his system. Say you buy a 500$ House's pup good blood all the bells and wessels, you feed it for 8 months say for 100$ you take it hunting and spend time trapping trainers ect say for 250$ worth of gas, you buy a few drags for 50$ you get it fixed or take it to the vet for some stupid ass pupppy thing or get all the shots for another 100$ you've easily spent 1000$ for a real shot in the dark so you probably baught 2 in the first place. Why have the headache when you can get one and start turning it loose the next day? Everybody has his picks and likes diffrent stuff but Mikes got a good deal going for lots of hunters.

Re: Dogs from Mike Kemp
i know a few guys that have dogs from mike that they like very well, but the price of those pups are too pricey for my blood. I don't have to pay that much for a good pup, I'm lucky enough to know a breeder that does the samething Kemp does, he has good blood to start with, has proven any crosses before he sold a pup from that cross, and he will not breed any dog if they have traits he don't care for. there are people other then Kemp that could hook you up with a killer pup and not charge you a arm and a leg for it, you just got to do your home work. good luck finding that phenom puppy.

Re: Dogs from Mike Kemp
How many good dogs can a guy like Kemp keep,he can't keep them all. Guys like Kemp do a great service to young hound hunters just getting started. If you think you have better dogs than he offers so what.I'm sure he makes good money on his dogs but I'm sure theres more to it than that.I've got what I got and if you a have better dogs good for you.

SO YOU BARE GROUND LION HUNTERS OUT THERE, OR THOSE WHO HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THE LENGHTY TRIBUTE TO MR. KEMP'S FINE DOGS.

Re: Dogs from Mike Kemp
I don't think Mike claims to be a dry ground lion hunter. It doesn't say any where on his web site about dry ground lion hunting but I would say with his knowledge of hounds he could probably figure it out.

Re: Dogs from Mike Kemp
In my opinion, a trail hound is a trail hound and therefore Mike Leonard is right on his show me thing. Hounds that ever catch much have to run scent and not chase snow tracks. When a lion is in wet snow it gives off alot more of that scent, and therefore the trailing is easier. Leonard sounds like he would just like to see one of those dogs hammer down a dry trail and show him what they are made of, and if they are good trail dogs they should be able to do that. However, it is not fair to take a hound out of a northern element one day and expect it to compete with a southern breed and hunted hound on dry trail on command, but a pup from Kemp's stuff that was raised in the southwest should have an equal shot at showing Leonard what he wants to know...........
Just my thoughts and I'm not taking sides, never been around a Kemp hound nor do I know or have I ever had any dealings with him...........

The only person that I know of that hunts those conditions with a Mike Kemp dog is KRK down in Kingman. I dont know if you have chimed in or not but I have been waiting for you to kind of give us an idea of how that dog handles a cold trail.

I thought I was the only one who was a little jealous that Mr. Kemp makes some decent money selling young started hounds.

Re: Dogs from Mike Kemp
I have bought seven dogs out of Mikes stock total. Two out of the initial seven did not make bear dogs. One is making a nice varmint dog and the other got bear whipped after seeing his kennel mate get his ribs pulled open and he wouldn't run a brush bear again. But the other five are making super stars on bear. Now five for seven is very good considering you might go 1 for 10 with other stocks when starting with pups. Not to mention the two that didn't make it would still run and catch bear but only in the timber not the brush. Now one of them is with a local varmint hunter doing great and the other I still have and I am currently selling because I am not a real varmint hunter and I am not doing this dog any good leaving it in the truck. I am a bear hunter. Just recently bought two more that I have not picked up yet. That should tell you what I think of them. A lot of guys out here buy these dogs for $1500 from Mike, put 50 bears on them in a season and get huge offers to sell them. I personally have never been offered as much money for a young dog as I have for the dogs I have from Mike. That tells you there is a demand.
They are worth the money considering everything you put into a pup until its eight months old. For me they are worth every penny. For others they might not be what your looking for if you don't want intelligence, speed, track style, grit, and toughness. Are there other dogs out there...yes there is. Are there other started dogs that are better...probably somewhere out there is but I have not found them yet. I know people all over the Western US that have this strain of hounds and they are working for them. I guide bear hunters in CA and I have not found a better consistent stock of dogs. Now is $1500-$2200 a lot of money. Yes it is. But how much are you spending if you are culling dogs like you should be because you are trying to be cheap after buying $300 pups and spending the time and money until its eight months old? I bought four walkers out of Oregon for $350 each, sent them to a trainer because I was swamped with pig hunters (another $1400), vet, feed, time and then finally all culled at a year and a half old. Now I could have bought two from Mike and been alot further ahead of the game.
These are not 90 pound dogs lion dogs in Arizona standing on there head taking a track. They are dogs that are bred for bear hunting. Apples and oranges. They have all that is previously listed and are smaller dogs, usually 40 pounders. These dogs will have the bear bayed or treed when the other dogs are still trailing in the last canyon. Trust me, I owned both kinds and I am rebuilding my pack with dogs from Mike's stock. As far as people wondering how these dogs do on lion it was this years Idaho Spring bear season, it was dry (according to the outfitter) and it was over 80 degrees and my dogs from Mike struck off the rig, trailed and treed a lion. This all during a bear hunt. I've got the video and you can ask the lion hunter outfitter who had my dogs during the bear season what he thought of them. He couldn't believe it and I was shocked too because I don't even hunt lion. This stock of dogs is something to be proud of. The only thing you can do wrong with these dogs is not hunt them. Mike wants these dogs to go to hardcore hunters so his advertisments are all over the woods, all the time, catching game.
Here is a pic of that lion.
