I hunt bear, but will show them a coon at 4 months of age or so. All of the Ursus dogs I have owned showed a great deal of grit and desire when showed the first coon, and most are well on their way to being solid bear dogs by 1 year of age.

The majority of these dogs are ready for bear by 8-9 months, which is the time frame I usually start mine in..Some guys like to start them sooner, but I like to give them a little extra time to be pups and run around on the farm.

like i said before i only have two that i can coment on, but so far so good. they are around 9 months i guess, and have treed a couple on there own. older dogs have rigged from the truck and they have found/started and treed. one thing i can say is they seem to be natural tree dogs. cant say how well they are on a long race at a young age, only seen coon so far.

There is quite a few ursus plotts here in sweden, thoose owned by hunters that have the opportunity to put them on enough bears (one bear every other year wont give a dog a fair chance really) shows a high percentage of sucess in hunting brown bears. Being outnumbered by far, there is an impressing percentage of bears taken every year with theese dogs. From what i have seen theese dogs abowe all other things have grit/guts and desire. :) Cant say much about speed, i think all plotts, from different lines i have seen, are slow... But i have a couple of foxhounds to compare with... Steve has always been a great man dealing with for me, i have only good things to say about him. :D (if it wasn`t for his habit to roll down the car window when it`s cold outside, THATS annoying!! )

Here are a few plott websites that will allow you to do the research on the lines you speak of.

www.plottworld.com
www.smithdealsociety.com
www.plottnews.com
www.plottdogs.com

I have heard that Leroy's dogs are still being bred by his sons and a few select others. As for the others, there may be some info on those boards for you...or you could join up and ask and I'm sure some of the plott historians can get you some info on those lines

Good luck!

I'm not sure on the dogs name but I don't think it is Joe Jury. I could be wrong because I don't keep on the dogs any more. If it is the dog I'm thinking of, I have a comment about what someone said. It has been wrote Steve doesn't worry about confirmation because he breeds performance 1st. Well not a bad way to breed, but if this is the dog I'm thinking of, he was bred before he was ever hunted. It was said the dog was way to valuable to hunt and prove???? Just a thought and I'm probably thinking of another dog. Oh, one more thing. If it is the same dog, it is about 1/4 Ursus. Mostly Weems and Nabek! Further more, I would like to see a pedigree on what some are calling a Ursus dog. I owned one of the last pure Ursus dogs, and Steve bought her back because I didn't like her. You will find Nabek has a big influence in most of the Ursus dogs. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with it at all. Larry produces bear dogs as well. Like I have said, when you get a good one you have something.

I suspect your talking about Ursus Joe Gerry, also known as White Pine Blitz. And its probably Joe Gier from Wi.
