I have the Astro 220 and DC 30 collar, and the hand-held long range antennae.
Seems I switch between the small rubber antennae and the long range antennae quite often, even 7-8 times an outing. I can see some possible longevity issues arrising with the constant unscrewing / screwing the SMA connections.
Anybody using BNC adapters over the SMA connectors?
I wonder why Garmin engineers went with the SMA over the BNC connectors?
Thoughts?

Help with Technical Language
I'm confused about the language on the Garmin. On their website, it says the collar communicates with the handheld by line of sight radio waves. If this is the case, what is the need for the satellite antennae on top of the collar? I did see where you can increase the life of the collar by increasing the transmit times - there are a few to choose from. I thought it transmitted to the satellite and from the satellite to the handheld?? Any help would be appreciated.

The way I understand it is that the collar gets a GPS cordinate from the satelites and so does the handheld unit. But then the collar transmits it's cordinates to the hand held gps via radio waves.
It's sort of like having two TVs (except the signal is coming from a satelite), they can get signals all day long. But one TV can always tell the other what it is watching as long as it's in range. If they were to try a some sort of relay deal through satelites, I'm guessing there would be a ton of extra traffic going back and forth through the satellites. Probably too much to handle unless you put a huge price tag on it. It's just like how satelite phone is so much more expensive than a cell phone.
This is just the way my backwoods brain understands how it works.

Help with Garmen
Nolte - thanks for the info. That makes so much more sense. It also clears up the 5 min vs 7 min times you can set the collar to. If it's receiving info every 7 minutes, that's more territory the dog can cover without getting a new GPS coordinate...Thanks again!!

Re: garmin?
Bearkiller, I took my Wildlife transmitters off the collars and attached them to my TriTronics G2 straps, combining the telemetry and shock collar onto the same strap.
Works good.
Then I run my Garmin and just a regular working collar. It's three straps, but it all works.
Going to a 3/4" working collar helps a little also.
Dogs are packing more $ around their neck than they are worth (LOL)

Re: garmin?
BIG J - im on my third warranty replacement astro 220. garmin support finally admitted to me that our VHF marine radios were burning out the reciever in the astro. also that they had known about this for some time (and dont bother telling anyone), and now that they knew i was using a marine, they weren't going to replace my astro if it happened again. and currently they have no plans to fix the problem.
