Re: Need tips on how to hunt coons with terriers
Just keep getting him out. Try during the day along sloughs. Mine find coon day and night doesn't matter. Just get on him about the rough stuff and fire him up on coon. Not much on drags prefer to have them chase the real thing.

Re: coon Q?
With the jagds I don't have the option to let them go. Just get it over with before one of them get hurt.

Re: coon Q?
I have found if you throw in a few jagds, those coon don't disappear near as often. It also works to go hang out in the spot the coon loses the hounds. Just my two cents.

Re: What is the biggest coon you have treed?
Shot one out of a tree that weighed 38 lbs, measered 40" from nose to tail. After it was skinned went to 50". Had one that was 56" after it was skinned, didn't have a scale handy to weigh that one.

Re: who hunts coon in the far north in the winter?
I prefer to hunt coon in the afternoon. If there are coon in the area they may be sunning outside the den. Just go to areas where you know they are holing up. Over here they can't sleep anymore, winter has been to hard on them already.

Re: Starting a pup
I start them on live coon as soon as they can find one. Until then just keep taking the pup to the woods. Remember if you can't find coon sign, how is the pup supposed to find a coon.

Re: what all do you carry?
It depends on the season. But I always carry lever action .22, .22revolver. Headlight, and flashlight. A good coon skinning knife and a tail stripper.
In the winter I will throw on the backpack and carry along a shovel, axe, crowbar. This year snowshoes are a must. The longer the season goes on the ...

Eastern SD
I was thinking about starting a coonhunting club, not real sure how many guys would be interested. Something us good old boys could get together and talk hounds, once a month have a jackpot hunt. Let me know if anybody is interested.
