Alaska is my second home. Yes, you can run black bears in AK. The question is would you want to. There are very few roads and the brush is so thick in most places, it is very difficult to get around. I've thought about running dogs up there many times. But every time I look at the logistics, I quickly decide against it. Wolves and grizzlies are the least of the problems.

Yes it is very possible to run dogs here, there are a handful of us doing it here with some success. but like full cry stated, brush is thick and roads are few and far between. Atv is your best bet. I have one contact in the wasilla area that run hounds, I could put you in touch with him. That far south you won't have to worry about wolves much. The key to avoiding Griz is to find where the blackies are thick. Glennallen is nearby and is black bear haven. Always take a machete. There are tons of critters, porkys, yotes, fox, moose, Lynx, wolverine, wolf, Martin, ermine, marmot, etc etc I could go on and on but it translates to Surprise races often for me with my trashy hounds ha!Black bears and hares are all you can legally run here with hounds. Shoot me a pm, and I'll be glad to help and give you as much info as you need.

I am just getting started with hounds and have lived down in Wasilla for a few years. The first thing you have to do is get your permit from ADF&G, by going and personally meeting with the biologist. He/she can give you permission to run dogs in their given zones, and so far I haven't had any opposition.
Despite the brush and the remoteness, there are great opportunities here I think, plus the opportunity to harvest lots of bears compared to other states. However, a vehicle-based hunt of any kind, besides atv, is pretty unrealistic. I keep my best spots somewhat guarded, but, its not impossible to put stalks on a dozen bears in a day in certain parts of this state.
PM me for additional questions, although AKZach has got more experience/knowledge.
