lost some pups last night

Post by Hunter »

I had bred two of my better bear dogs and was looking forward to keeping and working all 9 of the pups. I know that I had a chore infront of me but, I planned on culling down to the best two. They are about 8 weeks old now and doing great. They roam the yard and around the barn where my lot is at chasing cats and barking at the chickens. This morning my wife woke me up about 1 and said that there's something going on at the barn. I opened the door and heard pups wailing the dogs in the lot going nuts and a fight between their mother and something. I grabbed my turkey gun and a light and headed to the barn 100 yards away. When I got to the motion light the place lit up and coyotes were everywhere. I killed the first one coming out of the barn with a pup (dead) and then killed one of the two on the mother (eat up but alive) and broke down 1 and pretty sure I hit the other as they were running off. There were 4 yotes that I saw. Being out of shells and in my underwear I grabbed the fillet knife in the barn and went to work on the broken down bastard. They did their damage and I found 3 dead pups in the barn, one in the mouth of the yote and lost another I believe to shock this morning. If not for my dogs being broke from running yotes I would have turned them loose on the one that got away. Of course they don't get the small runts they got the biggest and boldest of the pups. The runts were hid under the kennel boxes. At any rate I hope I got most of the culprits so maybe they won't be back.

That's a shame.
My wife had to throw a lawn chair at a bear that had come at a female of mine with a litter. She and the female managed to run it off till she got the pups in the house but it came back and got the dog food.
That squeaking of small pups works better then any predator call and I learned those females and pups need to be somewhere secure.
I'm going to the dogs.

That's horrible.

We never had anything like that happen to us. We did have two litters, Some English/Bluetic pups and a Plott/Blueheeler&Bluetic pups. I know the last one sounds strange but anyone who knew my Spot dog and the Flash female knew why this cross was made.

Anyways, Some of the Plott pups wandered over to the bluetic litter and that mama reached over and bit a couple real good. By the time we got to them maggots got in their wounds and we had to put one down. I wanted to save the little bluetic colored one, she looked like her daddy. The whole back of her neck was an open wound and we didn't know what would happen. She lived and was a crazy little dog.

Her name was Maggie BTW :D
