Grit, Leave it all on the table er a ... fence!

Post by 007pennpal »

Here's a story, please share yours.

When I was a boy and newish to hound hunting a hunting friend of mine ran black n tans. I told him we need to head down to my uncle's farm because the coons were everywhere eating all the corn.

Next night we killed coon after coon with strike after strike and tree after tree. One coon went through an old fence that had a strand of barbed wire on the top. His super hot agreessive male got hung up on the fence banging his face into it again and again to try to get through the same hole the coon took. When we arrived at the fence we threw over one female that hadn't gotten over. When the male hound saw the female leading out, he climbed the fence and got some flesh tied up and cut up in the barbed wire.

I went over to the place where the male crossed and there was some dog flesh hanging on the barbs of the wire. Closer examination showed that the male had ripped his own balls off leaving them hanging on the wire.

True GRIT! He beat the female to the tree and treed loud and hard. Only taking a moment here and there to lick his shreded sack. The hunter extreme had his mussle stiched up and his sack just healed on its own. He remained a solid hunter as far as his age kept him running. No good for breeding of course. Ha ha. Anyway, that's some serious game and go right? Oh yeah, and he still had a deep baying voice. Not affected by the accidental castration.

Now let's hear yours.

I had a little walker female that I got from a relative in central California. He was a big time bear hunter and we'd bear hunt a few times a year when we went to visit. Anyway, we were bear hunting and the dogs went out of hearing and not having GPS in those days we lost the dogs. Well we got most of them back the next day but I was missing my little female. On the second day of hunting for her a lady called and said that she had came into her house so we told her we would pick her up that day as we were going on a hunt up her way. When we got to her house my dog had been hit by the bear(we think) and had been ruptured her lower side and stomach area so her intestines would slip in and out of the ripe in her muscle. I picked her up and placed her on some blankets out side of the dog box in the back of the truck. Needless to say we drove easy but went on hunting. Long story short we started a bear and treed it in the bottom of a deep canyon. Well, we hiked down to the tree and before we knew it I looked around and my little female had jumped out of the truck and came down and was treeing with the other dogs as hard as she could. I think that says she has a little heart and grit....

Its true, the dog lacked a little in the brain catagory. But he made it up in grit. I remember having to drag him off a broken top tree to show him how the coon crossed over to another tree, climbed down and kept running. He always relied on other dogs or humans to do the thinking. I think he thought his job was to be the killer. I wish I could remember his name, some hillbilly type name I think. Anyway, he is in my hall of fame for his efforts. I'm putting your female walker into my hall of fame too. Thanks for the great story.

Just another note on grit(?)...
My cousin in central California (the bear hunters) had an idea and breed a hound to a bull dog to get a dog that would really be a hair puller. Well, he got a dog that he named Jethro and I think he had just to much Bull dog in him. We treed a bear in a pine tree on the side of a step canyon. I cousin shot the bear dead and it fell to the ground. Old Jethro jumped in as the bear hit the ground and grabbed a mouth full of bear. Now the bear being already dead and falling on a step slope it started rolling to the bottom of the canyon. It was really funny to see the bear flop over and sling Jethro flop and the the bear roll over Jethro and so forth all the way to the bottom of the canyon. once they hit bottom the bear ended up on top of Jethro but he still would not let go. I laughed so hard that I all most wet my paints..... needless to say ole Jeth did not make it to many seasons......

Justaguy,
I hope he's not too close of a cousin cause I think he might just have a little Jethrow bred into him too. Joke only. You know, they do that cross all the time for hogs. At least I've heard. If you had fifty of them in a pack you could just carry a chain saw and no riffle. They could just strechem.
