garmin hunters dog speed ?

Post by kordog »

on jumped game according to the garmin what are your dogs running for speed under good scenting conditions. state breed and game your running im just trying to see what dogs are showing blazing speed im talking scent running not sight running. i know terrain has alot to do with it also . the garmin is a good measuring stick this is not a competition but more of an eye opener on what real speed is considered so be honest so that we all may learn something.

On jumped game my dogs usually top out at about 24 miles and hour. The terrain is mountainous with heavy pine forest, swamps and open fir hillsides. A real mixture of everything.

Can you somehow change the average speed to current speed.
I have tried to find the way to change it because average speed wont tell you how fast dog is going.

If you download your tracks from the Asto to your computer it will tell you every updated speed. If you are tracking every 5 seconds it will tell you the distance travelled and the speed. I hope that helps.

Dont take this the wrong way, take it as a compliment. I think your dogs are trackin jump gamed at that rate cuz you are huntin a different type of dog than most houndsmen and also cuz I believe your "jumped" game is hot as a poker. What I mean is that I think different types or kinds of dogs "jump" game at different "parts" of a race in their own minds.

Thats about right Dan. I know my cur type dogs catch bears alot quicker and make the trailing shorter then if I dump my hounds first. I still think my pack could use a little more teeth.

my hounds on a coyote average about 5 miles an hour consistently, even on those 30 mile chases, of course the really short races are alot faster. These dogs catch well over 50 percent of the coyotes they run.

Very honest statement,Johnnyrick.Because I think,if the dogs would miss a check at 24 miles an hour ,you would pick them up in the next county! LOL.

my dogs average between 4 and 5 miles an hour on a bear from start to finish. I thought I might be reading my garmin wrong or that I have slow dogs( which I know I don't) When I was reading some of these speeds.LOL

You won't tree many bears(or coyotes) running at 5 miles an hour. Your average speed may be 5 miles an hour but if you check your track log on your computer you will reach speeds of 20 mph when they jump the bear. Those average speeds include bay ups and losses. You might only catch a cold at 5 miles an hour.

i agree chilcotin the average speed on the garmin doesnt give what your dogs are giving in a burst of speed which is kinda what im looking for information on . thats why i said jumped game . you guys dogs cold trail probably at 3 to five miles an hour easily. is downloading the only way you can check it chilcotin . or is there a mode like current speed? i have yet to get a garmin, but i have used my buddys to track his coyote hounds. on my boat gps it will give my current speed.

I have never found that option. I have only used the download to compare the speeds of my different dogs. It will also tell you if there had been a few bayups along the way that you did not hear or which dog is putting in the most effort.
