Number of dogs to run bear!

In your honest opinion can a person run a bear successfully with two or three dogs?

If they are all bear dogs, of course.

You will be able to run them, but if the dogs aren't in great shape you won't be able to do it day in and day out. Alot of it will have to do with where you hunt. If your area is prone to shorter races then it obviously doesn't take as much energy out of your dogs, but if the dogs are spending 5+ hours chasin and bayin then you will probably have to let them rest a day in between.

The best way to see what kind of dogs you do have, is to run them in two to three packs, its hard on dogs and you cant do it day after day but they get in good shape and you know what you have!! Then you can work in different dogs! I hunted with three dogs for like the first three years i hunted! The dogs saw alot of game!

Reason I asked is becuase I can not afford more than two or three dogs. So I am wanting to know if it can be done. thats all.

i been runnin 3 dogs on bear this year. for the past 11 years i caught bear steadily with 2 dogs. i ran the hell out of 2 dogs and they get old fast. my oldest dog is 6, but he is so slow. my other three are all females. 2 are 3yrs old and 1 is two yrs old.
just remember to catch the bear not chase the bear.

Yes 3 dogs will def do it. Just remember though all it takes is one OOPS moment and you can be out of a pack of dogs real quick. Three years ago a couple hunting buddies turned out 5 dogs on a bear in some brushy country. 25 minutes later they had three dead and the other two full of holes.

Bear hunter is right on. I caught 42 with my 3 dogs last year, what I did notice if you had a long race one day you may as well stay home the next day. Unless you find a bear that will pop up.

I see. Makes sense. I lived in Wyoming and there you can't run bears with dogs. I used to live in Northern NM and was thinking of returning home to run some bears. But I was wanting to see if you could run three on bear. I hear a lot of guys turning loose 8-15 dogs at once. Yeah I do realize I need to catch not run. Thats what I am worried about a little. My dogs will catch what I want them to but they have never seen a bear.. We all know what could happen there.

ivery seldom every run more than three. a practice i inheritated was only having dogs than can do it by them selves period. just like coon hunting. i do not cosider a dog finished til it can catch its own bear. put two or three together like that you got it licked until the great wahoolie( big mean) bear puts you out of business. but you will go through several dogs finding those three. i have been very lucky in having several like this and also enjoy the feed back on dogs like that i have sold. i say go for it it is very possible.

In Sweden we can not (the law) use more then two dogs, and its on brown bears. Its a stupid law but we have to accept it and do the best of it!

Thats cool with the dog cam, Big Swede. That bear didn't put up much of fight but you dog stayed a a safe distance, which is important with grizz.
