That is not a bad idea. While I agree with the majority here that it was probably a lion, I do know for a fact(I learned the hard and expensive way) that rabid animals are here in Northern NM right now.
Sorry to hear about your loss. I would offer to come try to help you verify that it was a cat, and maybe catch it, but I just lost my two best lion dogs(see above), and the rest of my dogs are still quarantined.

I'll agree, better five or six hounds stretch a lion than have a lion eat your hounds! I've caught a good number of lions with only one dog, but never sent only one to do it--they say there is safety in numbers as long as the numbers don't turn into a problem........
Well guys just wanted to let you know I went back this afternoon and was finally able to find a track and confirm it was a lion. Not the big impresive super tom just an average size track. The scary thing is that the damn lion went in and moved the dog another 100yds after I left this morning. Thats when it finally drug the dog into some bare dirt where it left a bunch of tracks. I was itching for revenge but I guess its not the lions fault just took advantage of its enemies weakness. Well I'm down to just one 3 year old van johnson bluetick now so after three years its back to square one. Someone please remind me why we love lion hunting!

Nothing more breathtaking than walking into a tree or bay up and finding those hounds under a nice tom lion, an animal rarely seen in most parts but more easily found behind a trained pack of hounds. The rush alone quickly reminds a guy why he feeds and trains hounds, climbs those steep hills, pays out all the money in equipment, and yes why he buys and packs a camera.

Plain and simple, I have seen it a number of times. So now Cone and I are going to go catch that lion and I am going to let Bennie, not Bennie G but Big Bennie jerk a knot in it's behind and then he is going to post a photo of it. Oh by the way Bennie G is welcome to come on this hunt I heard that his camp cooking sucks but he sings a lovely lullaby! LOL!

Here is a crazy story about a couple of lions and dogs, and this came from a friend and happened just last week about 25 miles from here in Colorado.
Lion had been killing yard dogs in rural area but very close to town. It was sighted several times and then they call was made to have a local hunter come out and catch. Well he goes out to the last place it grabbed a dog, and pulls up with some hounds barking in his truck. the female lion comes out of the trees and several subs pretty good sized also emerged and were not alarmed at all. She walked right towards the dog truck I guess he dumped the box and the bawling hounds chased her up a tree. Not sure the whole story about the others or what happened maybe JB can give us more details.

First off sorry for the loss. second off I disagree with all the theories I have heard so far. I had a bobcat treed this year and a coyote came in to start a fight and had my dogs not put a stretchin on him I think he would have killed them ant ate them clean. It's not that I don't belive that a lion will eat a hound, because I have seen that. I just think coyotes are way more likely to do it. especially with more than one dog on the tree. I split trees and have single dogs stay over night on lion trees all the time. I don't think day or night has anything to do with it either. Go back and look at the pics that guys have posted about their dogs being eaten by coyotes. coyotes are territorial and they are attracted to barking dogs. lions don't usually defend territory from dogs and they usually just want to get the hell out of there, one dog or ten. Mesure the bite marks on the dog and that will tell you alot. I'm sure I'll catch some shit for this, but a lion coming down the tree and eating the dog just don't add up to me. not saying it couldn't happen, but why wouldn't the other two dogs keep chasin and treein the lion after it killed the other one? wouldn't take a whole pack of yotes long to eat a dog. keep in mind that it is coyote mating season and they get pretty crazy about it.

There are guys on here that know more about coyotes than I ever will. I have had my dogs fight coyotes before and they never had much of a problem. It was over pretty quick. When coyotes kill house dogs around here they taunt the dog and get them to chase the coyote, when the dog gets tired the coyote comes back in to taunt the dog and so on. Eventually the dog gets so worn out the athletic coyotes come in for the kill. I have watched coyotes attempt this with my dogs, it didn't work so well. My dogs were in better shape than the average house dog and caught the coyote, and made short work of it. Like I stated I don't know much about coyotes but I would think a hound vs coyote would be like a wolf vs hound. Just based on size alone.
If the dog is found with lion tracks around it, I would wager it was a lion. I think the likelyhood of the dogs being killed by coyotes, then eaten by the lion is pretty slim.
