I have seen that exact scenerio happen three different times, always in snow so no doubt, they treed the lion and it ended up coming out and killing dogs, they usually eat it clean except the head and paws! i seen em eat one while it was on a chain in the guys yard!

Piglet, without doubt you are correct. Something so simple and yet we have 5 pages written about it. Some just have to see the movie, read the book and, I guess, have a vision from God. JUST KIDDING!!!!!!
Re: Really bad day and alot of unanswered questions!
Gosh you guys you've got me scared to let my dogs out of the truck with all these dog hunting lions running around.
I'm giving the author of this post and all you fairy talers the benifit of the doubt here. it could very well have been the lion. only that dude knows the truth and he said what it was. but factor in that he is a hounder and that deminishes the credibility by 50 %. Of coarse he's gona say that there were lion tracks there wheather there was or not cuz you guys already had the story written for him before he went back the next day. it sounds way cooler than anything else so I guess we'll just leave it at that. you guys just be ware of the hound hunting cats lurking in the woods just waiting to run from your hounds all day and run up a tree and then when night falls come down and eat them like popcorn.
ha ha ha ha ha. I can't wait to tell this one around the campfire.

Hound hunt enough and it will happen to you someday! mike leonard i think was on a good point that in the southwest it seems like you hunt more dogs on lions, Ive treed alot of lions most with two dogs and alot with just one, and in 25 yrs of hunting i've had it happen twice and a friend had it happen, so its not a yearly occurence but two out of the three were on complaint cats that one had killed a house dog and other killed sheep!

One things for sure Piglet. If you have to go on a dog eater cat the more dogs the better. Last year i caught a huge tom, which was treed in low down in a big fir. Just before i got there I witnessed him jump down between Burger and Rudy and stand his ground. He had no intention of moving until I showed up on the seen then he treed solid 200 yards away. Who is to know what would have happened if the two dogs where left to fend for themselves for 3 or 4 hours. I just happened to be 10 minutes behind them.

This was the tom , no two dogs would stretch him that I know of. maybe i need better dogs.

Yes it really sucks if we lose our dogs in the hunt. If the game wasn't big and dangerous, would it be the same? If so, we'd buy all curs and hunt squirels.

really? they ate your dog at the tree slick to the bone? I split my pack alot and more times than not I catch lions with one or two dogs. I've had plenty of dogs get killed by lions, that is not what is in question here. I just don't buy the part of the lion being scared enough to run and tree and then deciding that he could eat the hound and then start preying on it. I know lions kill dogs and eat them when they come into town. I've had dogs fall out of trees and get killed, get mauled and killed, etc. just never had my hounds get hunted by a lion. also have seen two of my young dogs stretch lions on more than one occasion. and my "Hook" bitch hold a bunch of ronchy lions at bay on the ground and leave with only minor scratches. That's why I have such a hard time with this I guess. and finally the guy that made this post was there, he is the only one who knows what really happened.

Conejos wrote:Last nite i took my to lion dogs out for a run. Just roading them for exercise. About five miles from house I was going down a little two track road. I live in Northern NM and the country here is rolling hills of pinion, juniper, scrub oak and ponderosa and sage. Well back to the story anyways I was roading the dogs and when we got near a spring they struck a track and started working it pretty fast. I hurried and caught up with them but I could not find a track to confirm what they were trailing. I had the training collar on them so I bumped them once but they would not come off of it. Well about 6 miles and 3 hours later I can hear them treed up on a ridge about a half mile from me. The only problem then was that it was 10pm and I didn't have my pistol or a flashlite. I waited there for awhile and whatever they had jumped the tree and the race was on again. I gave up and decided to go back this morning. When I got almost back to the highway one of my dogs was there waiting but he was acting really strange. He just laid there shaking and I had to pick him up and carry him to the truck. He had no injury that I could see. So this morning I go back to look for my other dog. With my radio tracker I finally find him but he was dead and eaten. Only his head and skeleton were left. I back tracked but could not find any tracks as to what animal could have done this. I found where he had been drug about 200 yds off the hill to the arroyo where I found him and I could see where the attack had happened It looked like it was a fight that ended quickly as there was alot of blood all in one spot. I just wanted to know if anyone can make heads or tails of this. I am pretty sure they were on a lion last nite but they could have been trashing on a bear considering how fast they moved the track. Any opinions are welcome it has been a tough morning.
I still haven't ruled out the bear theory. it is much more likely and happens on a regular basis to most people that hunt them.

Way more dogs get messed up by lions here than bears and guys who run bears see 5x the amount of bears than cats...

really? that blows my mind! I catch as many lion as the next guy and probably alot more than some. I have just never seen the lions do very good against the dogs weither it be one on one ore one on two etc. bears down here on the other hand, if they want to kill your whole pack they just turn and do it. never seen either of them stay for dinner after either.

George don't take up running hogs. They don't like to play fair. We have had one bayed up and had more ralley the bay and start wooping dogs. These hogs weren't even in the bay.

Re: Really bad day and alot of unanswered questions!
I know it comes with the territory. Something we all have to face sooner or later. That is alot of the reason I don't have much of a desire to hunt hogs or bear. Those can be mean bastards. I usually hunt about 4 dogs and hope to get a long life out of them. I know dogs can kill lions on the ground. It typically is going to take more than two dogs. From the story that is what it looks like Conejos was hunting. I have been around long enough to have seen most everything get caught on the ground with dogs with the exception of hogs. From what I hear they can be gnarly.
I personally have never heard of a bear actually eating dogs, never heard of a pack of super coyotes killing and eating dogs. I am sure it can happen, but I think a lion or wolf is alot more likely. I learn something new every day though.

I didn't read the whole thread because it was long but i'll chime in on what i think. It absolutely doesn't sound like bear unless that was some weird effed up bear with rabies or something. Wolf defintely no, unless you live on the border near Arizona. Cuz ik here in Eastern Arizona in the White MOuntains we have wolves and there are a few living populations just east of the border but none have ventured outside the Gila Wilderness from i've heard. To add most of the wolf population is in Arizona and the ones that do travel to Nm don't go far. This sounds like a lion to me.

Also wanted to say how its sick how some people act jokin about their dogs dying by animals. that is frickin sick
