bob cat dogs
Do old lion dogs from out west make good bob cat dogs in the mid west. The reason I am asking is there seems to be more and more bobs in my area or I am seeing them more and I am trying to get some young dogs going on them any help or advice would be helpful. Dosent seem to be many cat hunters around here that I know of to ask

Re: bob cat dogs
Very few,but there are exceptions. They need to be fast track dogs for bobs, and good locators.

Re: bob cat dogs
You should talk to Dads dogboy. He posts on here and is from the south east. I don't know him but have read his posts. By his post you can tell he knows what he is talking about. There also is a guy from Kentucky i believe named hershal joiner i don't think he is a cat hunter but he crossed some walker and trigg dog and the pups went to oregon and washington and made barn burning bobcat dogs. They were a little weak on the tree but track driving s.o.b.s smart too bump them a couple times with an e collar for leaving a tree and that semmed to fix it. hope that helps those guys are closer to you and could get you started in the right direction.

Hey Richard
Sorry I didn't get back to you..
I wouldn't get an old lion dog and try and turn it into a bobcat dog out there.. I would try a bobcat dog from Cali, Oregon or Washington to try out there.. I don't know if it would work.. but I think you would have a better shot.. I think with a lot of the southern states (I am talking Utah/Colorado/Arizona/New Mexico).. the low trees and catching them in bluffs/cliffs etc... it would be hard for an old lion dog to switch over to locating..
There are some bobcat dogs out east there.. and when I can think of the names I will post them..

Well, here is my "2-Cents Worth"!!
I tried 6 diff. dogs that were from Western States of ID, MT, & NV. I had one dog that was 1/2 Bluetick/1/2 Running Walker that converted into a bobcat dog in OK and was a pretty good one. He is now in BC with a great gentleman who has a guide service and hunting him on lion & lynx. But, he developed in a bobcat dog that would run at front of my pack, locate tracks when pack made a loss, and located fair to good when treed. At first, he would keep his "nose on ground" to much and had to learn to get his head up and run. But he learned!! And when he was delivered to his new owner, and I didn't have him in my pack, well I sure missed him and his "pick-ups" and kept listening for his bawl mouth!
One of the small Treeing Walker female would try, but would look like she had been in a knife fight after a race in our green briar patches! Plus, should never could keep up with the pack and was always getting way behind.
The other four dogs, I gave away! Enough said!!!
This subject came up this weekend while we were waiting on it to stop raining long enough for us to either put the dogs down, get them off the top of the box, or let them out--maybe rain had stopped??? WRONG!!
I'm convinced that if you take a middle of the road dog that has been hunted in Southern States on bobcats to the Western States---they will shine! Mine do anyway--and I think they are all just middle of the road dogs!! Granted, like Saturday on a two hour cat race in weed patches that were chest high, head high corn patch, and then throw in some green briar patches, two of the three made me proud to be feeding them!
My male dog (just turned two in June) found that bob 5-6 times when they lost him! Jumping him and getting the track back moving. By the way, it ended at old burned out cotton gin on highway with traffic, where we had to catch all dogs! But wow--what a race for 2 hours +.

Re: bob cat dogs
I think you would be pretty disapointed if you tried an older, strickly lion dog on bobcat. If you are looking for something to run your young dogs with find a older vetran bobcat dog from out west and with a little time they should adjust.
The home of TOPPER AGAIN bred biggame hounds.

Re: bob cat dogs
If you want a cat dog that is bobcat dog the top ones are started on bare ground and ran on only bobcats. Oregon, Washington or California. There is exceptions, some dogs can be hunted on all game and do well. I would assert that most of the hunters have not ever hunted with a top cat dog even though they thing they have. Dewey

Re: bob cat dogs
Where in MO r u hunting,I ran cats in Mo for a long time,my advice is this, first MO isflat the toughest place in the worold I've run cats, there is a dozer pile every quarter mile, heck that's why I have a jadgterrier, lol,I've bought dogs that were top cat dogs in other places and flat looked like they needed to be shot in MO,cats down there are a bit leggier and can cover the ground if they take a notion, but most will beeline for dozer piles, and most of the rest will squirel out on you and hop tree to tree and get away, they best results I found are this,if u can find a dog that can do it by its self in MO pay what ever you have to too get it but u won't,I started a walker pup and a lep cur on squirel and after they were lookin up I switched them over to feral cats with bobcat scent, they both could track, but thw hound wanted to put its head down more, and the lep would over run a track, but if I could get to the track early enough I could catch, but neither 1 of these dogs could do it alone, but together they where cat haters, anyway brother the first thing you need to do is try and change ur mind, this is a long hard painfull road, and u will go threw a pot load of dogs before u find a cat minded pup, after all that I think now If I was doing it again I wooda start w 2 lep pups,I've hunted a lot better dogs since then, anyway I don't know much after looseing for so long but what I do kno for sure is u need a crazy fast dog that will. Use its head as much as its nose, and u have to go along so u can help pick up lost tracks til the dogs kno to look or you will never see anything,a good pair of walking boots are in order, good luck, will shair anything I know if it'll help.
