Duelin Dan

Post by Yard Dog »

Would like to hear from anyone running dogs out of Duelin Dan. I have a young pup out of him myself and would like to hear from anyone on how their dogs are doing and what I can expect out of mine.

Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion, I know who Gerald Yoder is. I got my pup from Mike Fields in Iowa, I guess him and Gerald both share ownership of the Dan dog. I was more interested in hearing if anyone has been running any cats or bear with any of these dogs.

Just curious.....

live to hunt,

My pup is about 9 months old now, my fault, but I just have not been able to really get him in on anything yet. We run more bobcat than lion and most of the areas where we run there are a lot of deer and ledges. Usually only put down 2-3 dogs, any more and things get screwed up. However the snow is going fast and I should be able to get him started pretty good on coon before the spring bear persuit gets here.
As far as how the dog is put together, he is very leggy, seems to be very agile and quick, not clumsy at all, he has a raspy bawl. His head is longer and more pointed than I care for (I like a good square headed dog) and he does not have a lot of ears. My dad has a full litermate female to the pup I have so between the two we should have a good grasp of how the dogs are going to do.

Hopefully by the end of the summer I will be able to tell you more....

Well here is the information I have gathered on UKC board. Keep in mind I am not in any way bashing this dog or your pups. I have gathered that the owners of Dan do not hunt him on lion or bear. I have heard that he produces good pups and I have also gathered that some of his pups are mean at the tree. I don't know what all is the truth but it was about 80-20 most of them turning out to be great competition hunters. I have not yet found any that are being used to lion hunt or bear hunt. Not to say that there are not any. I hope that helps some.

I read this I read that. Well I have hunted with a few Dan dogs and I haven't seen any of them ill at a tree yet. I was with a cast at b&t days that consisted of 2 out of Dan and one out of Hatchett and they were all hard hard tree dogs. We had a good hunt with no problems what so ever. The Dan dogs I have seen were hardcore tree dogs and mostly pretty straight on what you hunted em on. They like to get treed so I'm not sure how they would fair on bears or cats. They are not breed to be pack dogs, but are very trainable. You also really really need to take into consideration the dams triats.

I have heard Ace bred dogs were mean on a tree so I tried one and treed alot of bears with him and never saw any aggression.

I also heard Albert bred dogs wouldnt get treed. The best female Ive owned to date would tree bears and coons alone consistantly and she was Albert/ C&S Smokey bred. Dan is heavily Smokey bred.

Ken Duncan has done a good job promoting big game black and tans, but he has incorporated a ton of Big Time Albert in his breeding program. When you guys all post on here threads about Duncan bred hounds I think of Albert hounds because they are unanamously known to be alot of Gene Hicks breeding.

Sorry to get off topic but how is that dog doing for ya and is he for sale, because that is an outstanding cross he is out of.

Take what people heard or read as a grain of salt. Train your pup the way you want it to hunt. If you have questions per each bloodline the best thing you can do is go hunting with them and not get on here and post 3rd person stories.

Also Dan has a pointy head and short ears but that didn't stop him from getting on the podium.

Take care.

The dog is just over a year old now and I am still feeding him. He does hate a cat, will wind a cat near the bottom of a 10 acre hayfield behind my kennel and be on the fence for an hour. He has had a slight habbit of face barking the older dogs but I think he is on the downhill side of getting over that. Lots of energy and drive, has been trailing and going with the older dogs on coon. Has not been ill or growly with other dogs. Glad to hear about not being pack dogs as I do not need any "me too dogs". Will just keep huinting him, looking forward to the first snows and bobcat season.

biggsnell, thanks for the info. My dogs not for sale however, if you are looking, shoot me a pm as I know of one (a dan pup) that may be.

Thanks.

Yard Dog, Ive got a 5 month old male pup out of Dan that I plan on getting going this winter. Live To Hunt has a female littermate to mine, so between the 3 of us, we will give them a good shot at biggame. Good luck!
