UDWR LION harvest

Post by black eye »

Well its that special time of year when the UDWR puts the lion harvest plan together. Meetings start july 27th. Check out the UDWR website for more info and dates.

Well needless to say with increases and upgrades propsed a guy might want to drop in on his local RAC meeting and see just what unit they'll over harvest this year???

I'm sure the "sfw" will show up again and sell to all the "pawns" lions are still eating the deer all gone. 13 years of harvest objective and the deer heard is still in the tank!

What do you guys think???

I totally agree man. they claimed to have dropped the number of tags last year, but they did it on units that never fill anyway. I'll be hittin my rac meeting up for sure. I don't understand why they don't make it tom only or even limit the amount of females harvested?

Sure would be nice to see at least a fe-male sub-quota statewide!!!!!

Think it is time to get rid of harvest objective. The split should not scare the legit guides as surely they can catch lions in the dirt??

Seems a few clowns around here have a little trouble killing in the right unit when they have an over the counter tag. Sure it will get worse as the economy dumps.

Just my opinion.

I do think bumping the split units back a couple weeks saved a few cats and discouraged alot of wanna be's. on a normal year it would have been even better, but all those freak snow storms through april and may hurt the cause. one good thing about the snow this year is that a few units that usually overkill down here got closed down before the split opened. isn't it stupid that the way their check in works on the harvest you can over kill a unit. I saw beaver mountain overkill by more than 5 cats one year. 48 hours to check a cat in is good, but you should have to call as soon as you get to phone service and they should have someone full time updating it to prevent the overkill.

What needs to clarified by the RAC's is the "any cougar accompanied by an adult" line in the proclamation. As most of us know, the intent of this line is to forbid the pursuing or harvesting of kittens still with their mothers, but there are those in the law enforcement arm of the DWR that are interpreting it to mean that turning out on practically every multiple lion track is forbidden (two adolences traveling together would be the only exception).

In other words, if you have a female in estrus accompanied by a big tom, these fishcops are saying you can't pursue or harvest either one of them. Or if you come across a case where one territrial tom is is stalking and driving another tom out of his territory, again the taking or pursuing of either one of them is forbidden. It is also possible that on a kill site where a single lion has made multiple tracks coming back and forth from feeding, an over zealous fishcop may say that they were made by more than one lion and thus illegal and issue a citation.

We all want to protect female lions with kittens, but this line in the proclamation to needs to be rewritten to prevent misuse by the lawdogs, and the RAC meetings is the venue to do it. Let's make sure this is brought up in every regional RAC meeting so the wording can be cleaned up.

Hell ya it needs to be changed! a buddy of mine was accused of killing a kitten this last season, because of that gray area in the proclamation. the cat was over 7 feet, grey face, big head, about 130 lbs etc. he was collared a week prior and was accompanied by a female. no evidance was ever found that he was accompanied while we chased him and charges were dropped. but if there would have been any other tracks in the area they would have tried to build a case! my buddy holding the cat is 6'3" and 230. now back to the harvest.
