I have seen dogs start semi-open and go to open. Have any of you veterans seen a dog go from open to silent?

Of course, alot of dogs will learn to shut up at times. Older dogs that are tryin to get up on their game sometimes will let up a bit on how much mouth they give at times. No dog should be barkin when they aint at the front. Good young hounds will start running at 3 to 4 months and opening hard on bunnies or whatever but you put them in with a pack at 7 or 8 months old and you wont hear them. Reasone being, they cant run at the front and they should be shut up if not they need a killin.

there are different reasons a dog may go from open to silent here are a few the game is getting a big lead , the dog has figured out that if he shuts up he can gain on them ,the dog is scared of its game which ive seen they will run it still but want to be able to here it if they get to close ,they get exhausted . im sure there are more .it takes more effort for a dog to bark and run instead of just run.

I appreciate the posts, and agree totally with both. I was talking about a dog right out of the box that is put on a track. He used to open as soon as he could smell it. Now though, you are thinking he can't get it, then you track him and he is leaving out. You drive around on another road and he is either treed or bayed.

Was talking about closed-mouth on trail. A dog needs to hush if he aint leading a race, but I was talking about game that isn't jumped.
