Treeing Bear in NC

Post by Kyle »

I've got a dumb question for those in NC. I belong to a "versatile dog" forum and there is a guy on there claiming that bears in NC don't tree because of their size, too big. Is there any truth to this? His dogs bay the bear.

I don't buy it, but need some input from people with experience hunting in NC.

Thanks,
Karen

absolutely true, most of the bears we kill dont climb. our bears get big because they dont hibernate and they have consistant food sources year round. check out the first couple of Bear Crazy videos, they were filmed here. you wont see but a couple treed. eastern NC is a totaly different type of bear hunting than you will find any where else.

Most of the bears killed in eastern NC probably are killed on the ground. but a lot of them will tree, if they can find a tree big enough. There just are not a lot of trees that will hold a 5 or 6 hundred pound bear in eastern NC. I know a few guys who bear hunt and they tree plenty. Most of those are smaller ones (under 300-350) during training season. Its just hard to find a tree big enough to hold some of the massive bears around here that people like to kill. I would think not many places have trees big enough to hold a 600+ pound bear. and we have plenty of those size bears around here for the reasons wanchese mentioned.

Well in Western North Carolina its different.....the bears dont get as big as the eastern part so yes they do tree. We have had a couple bears that would climb but most of the bears we run end up treein

he's right. around here, you'll find a few that'll back up and bay, but for the most part, they pick a tree and climb.
