Has anyone out there treed a bear with just one dog? I only got a bluetick, that's why. Let me know? :)

Many times. One of the biggest bears i ever caught I treed with 1 dog. Just depends on the bear, the terrain, and the dog. Some bears are easy some arnt

Many times. I even treed a bear with a dog on a leash. When guiding I would put the dog on leash and trail it until I found a track to make sure it was a big one from a strike on the rig. I trailed one up to a tree while looking for a track. Dewey

Many times. And now that I have a garmin I see that most of the time one or two dogs are doing the catching and treeing before the rest get there.

In most packs, it is essentially one dog that catches the bear no matter how many dogs are on the track. In good packs, most of the dogs can catch a bear alone. That's just my opinion. I had a bluedog years ago. He put up well over a hundred bear alone and I didn't even consider him a good bear dog.

Yep, many a time. In a tree and on the ground. The right dog can do it consistantly. Don't let anyone fool you and say every bear trees, or that 15 dogs will make a difference. As long as your having fun and catching some game, then enjoy having a cheap dog food bill! :joker

All the time buddy. Most packs there's only one dog doing it all anyways. The others are either tagging along trying hard or just along for the ride. I have a pack most people would shoot but, I run 4 dogs at a time. I have two dependable tree dogs and then I got fur pullers and pups. I hunt 1 tree dog with a pup and 2 fur pullers. The fur pullers will tree but, not as hard as the "tree dogs" and the "tree dog" doesn't pull fur like the "fur pullers". It works for me and however you deside works for you brother go with it.

Sure you can, but I wouldn't make it a point to only run one dog all the time. That dog can get in a bad spot and get beat up pretty easy. It all depends on the temperament of the dog. If he is a real pressure bay dog on a caught bear when alone, you are going to end up with some higher vet bills. There is nothing else for the bear to concentrate on besides the one dog. I've seen some dogs that were real good at being solo and doing well, but they usually learned to give a little more respect to a bear when by themself.

It's my opinion that by running one dog you will also catch a higher percentage of bears on the ground . Those same bear would tree if you had a couple more dogs in there.

I agree with nolte, except, its as much the temperment of the bear, or more, sure an easy bear, you can tree with a collie, or as my buddy which was just here from out of state said, these bear dont climb much, without a lot of pressure, where is the circus bear to tree))). One or ten dogs, if he dont want to climb, he wont, and will die fighting, sure grit, A strong pack up's the odds, but certain ones, will simply not climb, big or small bear.

Nolte I know what your saying but, there are some dogs that actually KNOW what it takes to tree bear. Like one that I hunted with would open just enough for you to locate her and then went quiet right before she treed. I often wondered if she learned to sneak up so close that when she did open it would scare the living hell out of the bear and the first responce was to tree. She was a slow methotical dog that was hunted alone alot too. She made for a GREAT puppy trainer.

I caught three bears with just one dog this year but I ran quite a few with that dog alone that I didn't see in a tree or bayed up on the ground. The other hand of the story is when he had help we caught most of the bears that he started and ran.

Yes the first cur I ever got put one up by himself @ 9 months. He would run silent and get right up on them and blow up. Most of the time I think the bears crapped their pants and treed. 90% of the runs were under a mile, then finally we ran into a bear that said "no" lol.

Was blessed to hunt with a pack hounds 1 mine and the other 3 (Maine in the early 90's) where each dog could and did strike , trail , fight and tree there own bear. It was very common to have two or even three races going and end up with two or three bears treed at the same time. If you have REAL BEAR DOGS it DOES NOT TAKE6-8-10 hounds to tree any bear regardless of the bears weight just 3 REAL BEAR DOGSwill get the job done .
