Re: Wild Pork
I feed the raw meat and bones, and also play hide and seek games with the hooves and hide, which they eat a fair bit of when playing. Haven't had a problem yet. I would imagine the risks would be similar to any other game. Could be off base though. It will be interesting to see what others post.

Re: Wild Pork
We feed a good bit of it. I think you need to be on a stringent worming program when you feed any raw meat. I know guys that don't feed any dry feed.
We don't feed as much meat in the summer. I don't know if it is because of the heat combined with humidity, but our dogs can't seem to run as long in the summer when we are feeding meat. I don't know if it is something scientific or just in our minds. Maybe someone on here knows more about it than me.

Re: Wild Pork
Do any of you guys have dogs that wont eat it?
When we kill bears and skin them we try and give our dogs some of it, but they won't eat it, they won't even eat it cooked.

It's funny you say that Cody! I have a 3 month old Plott/Ridgeback cross that I can't hand feed either. Otherwise he's really nice. I thought it was the Ridgeback but maybe not.

Re: Wild Pork
That dog of mine just stays hungry! He looks calm as he can be till you hold him some meat out, then he strikes likes a cobra. He ain't trying to be mean, but he always seems to get my thumb and half of two other fingers.
He kinda eats like me!

Re: Wild Pork
If you want to battle parasites keep feeding that raw wild meat. It is hard enough on and in clean cement kennels to keep them hounds worm free if that is even possible feeding commercial dog food. I am not saying not to supplement with meat but I would at least cook it to 160 degrees before feeding any meat, domestic or wild. Just my opinion.

Re: Wild Pork
did it. will do it again as the opportunity permits. haven't had anymore parasite problems than when i fed kibble but the dogs carry more muscle & have better endurance. only problem i've seen feeding wild meat is sometimes not enough fat in the diet. i fix that the same way i get a dog to eat meat they are turning their nose up at. i fry some GOOD bacon & pour the grease over the meat.

Re: Wild Pork
I feed raw pork, deer, or what ever is in the freezer. I have never had a problem. The dogs coats sure get a good shine also. I say feed it, my 5 love it. But like one of the other guys said, watch your fingers.

Re: Wild Pork
Personally, I believe that wild pork does carry a higher parasite load than other game meat, however, if you have a decent parasite program, the dogs will do better with the raw pork than without.

On to the next question: Is the standard heartworm pill once a month sufficient or do they need a little booster?

Re: Wild Pork
I give them 1/10 of a cc per 10 pounds of body weight of ivomec monthly. That will get liver flukes and heart worms. I use an oral wormer monthly for round and tape worms.
Don't give ivomec to a dog over a year unless he has been checked for heart worms. If the dog has them, the ivomec will kill the worms and the dead worms will clog his heart.

The standard heartworm pill once a month is sufficient for the heart worms, but it won't get some of the intestinals. What Cody suggested will get pretty much everything and is less expensive.
